HUNTSVILLE, TEXAS- The UTEP tennis team claimed the doubles point while also getting singles victories from Rebeca Calvillo and Ximena Fuentes but ultimately was held off at Sam Houston State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon.

The Miners (0-6) opened up strong with triumphs at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to stake the 1-0 edge heading into singles play. The Bearkats (2-1) regrouped and managed to rally for the team triumph behind wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5.

Carolina DeLuca/Martina Trierweiler started strong and never looked back on the way to an 8-3 dismantling of Sheridan Currie/Cally Woerner at No. 1 doubles. The duo of Calvillo/LeBlond also impressed, dispatching Anrinette Botha/Kayla Stevenson by the same score at No. 3 doubles.

Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Fuentes came up shy in their contest at the second slot against Nadya Dubyanskaya/Tatyana Postnikova, 8-3, but it was a moot point.

UTEP had a rollercoaster ride in singles play, and eventually would have to settle for a close call with regards to the match's outcome.

Calvillo cruised past Postnikova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 2 singles. Fuentes displayed tremendous leadership at No. 6 singles against Natalie Seira Petaia. She was bounced in the first set, 7-5, but still rolled to the win thanks to identical scores of 6-4 in her favor in the second and third sets.

Abdrakhmanova went back-and-forth with Dubyanskaya at No. 3 singles. She lost the first set, 6-2, but took the second set, 6-2. With the result of the match hanging in the balance, the sophomore was forced to retire while trailing in the third set, 3-2

LeBlond was also dealt a setback in three sets Facing Currie at No. 5 singles, the freshman was dominant in the first set which she won, 6-1. Her fortunes changed, though, and she went down by the same score (6-2) in the second and third set.

. DeLuca was a bit out of rhythm against Imke Jagau, and she was stricken with a 6-3, 6-2, defeat at No. 1 singles.

Glebova came up a bit shy against Botha at No. 4 singles. She fought hard but was held off, 6-4, 6-4.

UTEP will look to cap its weekend on a high note when it squares off against Conference USA foe Houston at 10 a.m. MST Sunday.
