DENTON, TEXAS- Senior Ximena Fuentes ran her winning streak to six while Martina Trierweiler and Carolina DeLuca also picked up triumphs but the UTEP tennis team was held off at North Texas, 4-3, Friday afternoon.
The Mean Green (5-9), who have been ranked high as No. 60 nationally this year, grabbed the early edge in the match by securing victories at each of the doubles courts. The Miners (4-9), who were without the services of freshman standout Rebeca Calvillo, looked much better in singles play. They registered triumphs at No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 but ultimately came up shy. It marks just the second setback over the past six matches for the Orange and Blue.
"The team played with a lot of heart and a lot of passion," UTEP head coach Victor Aguilar said. "I am proud of the effort."
It was tough treading in doubles action for the Miners, with UNT getting it done at each of the courts. Irina Paraschiv/Barbora Vykydalova bounced Trierweiler/DeLuca, 8-4, at No. 1 while Madura Ranganathan/Nadia Lee toppled Gabi Vazquez/Fuentes, 8-2, at the second spot. Amy Joubert/Paula Dinuta wrapped up doubles action with an 8-3 defeat of Alexandra Glebova/Dariya Abdrakhmanova.
UTEP regrouped nicely in singles play, nearly pulling off the challenging come-from-behind victory. Fuentes ousted Joubert in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6) at No. 6 singles. The sixth consecutive win pushes her mark to 12-11 on the year, including 8-5 during dual-match play.
Trierweiler rolled past Paraschiv, 6-2, in the opening set in their match at No. 1 singles. Her foe struck back to notch the second set, 6-7, but the sophomore prevailed in a super tiebreaker, 1-0, (10-5).
DeLuca enjoyed similar success in the match-up with Vykydalova at No. 2 singles. The junior showed good toughness in locking up the initial set, 7-5. Vykydalova managed to win the second set, 6-7, but DeLuca delivered in the clutch super tiebreaker, 1-0 (10-7).
The Miners could not come up a win at the other positions, though, with the home side ultimately emerging victorious. Dinuta derailed Vazquez, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 3 singles while Ranganathan toppled Glebova, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 4. Lee handled Abdrakhmanova, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 5 singles.
The Miners have two more matches on tap this weekend. They will challenge Northwestern State at 11 a.m. MDT Saturday before concluding their stay in Denton, Texas, with a 9 a.m. MDT match against UC Santa Barbara on Sunday.
