MEMPHIS, TENN.- Senior Ximena Fuentes continued her strong play of late with a victory at No. 6 singles but it wasn't enough as the UTEP tennis team was tripped up at Memphis, 5-2, Friday afternoon.

Fuentes bounced Andrea Arques-Garcia, 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-8) to move to 7-2 over her past nine matches while Gabi Vazquez joined her in the winners' circle thanks to her foe retiring at No. 4 singles. The Miners (5-12, 1-2 C-USA) couldn't put it all together in the other matches, though, with the Tigers (13-8, 2-1 C-USA) ultimately prevailing.

"It was a good competitive match," UTEP head coach Victor Aguilar said. "Ximena Fuentes did a great job of leading us as a senior. We just need to try to bounce back against Southern Miss on Saturday."

Action initiated in doubles, with Fuentes/Vazquez joining up to post a convincing 8-3 win against Mariya Slupska/Kathleen Hawkins at the second position. The home side would emerge with the doubles point, however, as result of the outcomes at No. 1 and No. 3.

It was a back-and-forth contest at the third position. The Miners' freshmen tandem of Rebeca Calvillo/Marie LeBlond fought to the very end only to be edged out by Garcia/Stefanie Mikesz, 9-7. Martina Trierweiler/Carolina DeLuca were dispatched by Courtney Collins/Kelly Gray, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.

Following a quick break, action switched to singles play. Fuentes was the standout for the Orange and Blue, posting the come-from-behind victory. Vazquez notched a win thanks to Gray retiring at No. 4, but the Miners were unable to secure triumphs at the other courts.

Trierweiler nearly emerged victorious as well, but the sophomore came up just shy against Slupska at No. 1 singles. She was held off by a final score of 7-6 (7-2), 7-5.

Calvillo was bounced by Collins, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 2 singles while DeLuca dropped the match against Mikesz by the same score at No. 3. LeBlond was derailed by Hawkins, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5 singles.

UTEP will look to regain its winning ways when it wraps up the regular season with a pair of neutral-site matches on Saturday. The Miners will square off against fellow C-USA member Southern Miss at 8:30 a.m. MDT before challenging Southern University at 12:30 p.m. MDT.
