EL PASO - The UTEP volleyball team opened the day with a 3-0 sweep against Lamar University at the MCM Elegante Invitational, before suffering a 2-3 (25-22, 25-23, 21-25, 16-25, 9-15) setback to Mississippi State on Saturday, Sept. 10.
Junior Bridget Logan had a stellar showing, posting a career-high of 23 kills against the Bulldogs.
Senior Stephanie Figueroa registered a match-high of 29 digs versus Mississippi State. The Puerto Rican native was named to the MCM Elegante Invitational All-Tournament Team Saturday night.
UTEP vs. Mississippi State
UTEP suffered its second setback of the season on Saturday, dropping a 2-3 decision to the Bulldogs.
It didn’t take long for UTEP to take control of the match as they came out and won the opening set, 25-22. Senior Marie-Therese Joyce led the way with four kills and three blocks.
The Miners went on to win the second set with a victory of 25-23 over MSU. Logan tallied five kills, while Setter Malia Patterson racked up 12 assists.
The Bulldogs quickly answered back taking the final three sets of the match. MSU out hit UTEP .235 to .193. Caitlin Rance led the Bulldogs with 23 kills, eight digs and three block assists.
Overall, the Miners posted 60 kills, 60 assists, 65 digs and a total of 13 team blocks in the match.
UTEP vs. Lamar
Herrera collected 14 kills, eight digs and four block assists, leading the Miners past Lamar University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-23).
Following closely behind was Jeane Horton and Logan with 14 and 12 kills each. Figueroa recorded 19 digs, while setter Patterson tallied 41 assists.
The Miners showed their strength at the net, slamming 49 kills to hit a match-high .307 for the match. UTEP held the Cardinals to just 29 kills and a hitting percentage of .109.
