EL PASO, TEXAS- The UTEP tennis team regained its winning ways with a decisive 7-0 victory in against in-state foe UTPB at the El Paso Tennis Club Friday afternoon. The Miners (2-8) dominated every match, dropping only a combined 16 games total throughout the match.
UTEP sent an early message it would be a long day for the visitors by sweeping the three doubles matches. Rebeca Calvillo/Martina Trierweiler whitewashed Olivia Baltazar/Ynez Sanchez, 8-0, to start things off at No. 1 doubles. The Miners' pairing of Dariya Abdrakhmanova/Anastasiya Sylenko cruised past Tiffany Mitchell/Brittany Farmer, 8-1, at No. 3 and Gabi Vazquez/Marie LeBlond completed the sweep by trouncing Breigh Shotwell/Jordan Turner, 8-2.
Focus then switched to singles play, where the Orange and Blue continued to pour it on. LeBlond was flawless in a 6-0, 6-0, downing of Farmer at No. 5. Trieweiler took apart Shotwell, 6-0, 6-1, at the top slot while Calvillo did so against Sanchez at No. 2 and Abrakmanova achieved the feat vs. Turner at the fourth position.
Anastasiya Sylenko worked over Mitchell, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 6 singles and Vazquez ensured a perfect day of action for the home side by derailing Baltazar, 6-3, 6-3, at No.3.
The Miners will continue their season-long five-match homestand when they play host to UMKC at 9 a.m. MST on Sunday.
