ASU 3, UTEP 1
EL PASO – Junior Jeane Horton was named to the El Paso Sports Commission Invitational All-Tournament Team on Saturday.
“Jeane (Horton) competed really hard and has been training hard for a long time,” said head coach Ken Murphy. “I think she keeps getting better and it’s good to see someone like that who puts in a lot of work succeed.”
The outside hitter hammered a season-best 21 kills and registered a .405 hitting percentage against Arizona State. Horton leads the Miners in kills, posting a total of 51 this weekend.
Also earning spots on the All-Tournament team are Breanne Van Every (Idaho State), Korrin Wild (Fresno State), Maci Murdock (Fresno State), Stephanie Preach (ASU), Macey Garner (ASU) and MVP went to Erica Wilson (ASU).
“You always have this goal that you go into these tournament and you want to get better through the weekend, but we didn’t expect that our confidence would be low” said Murphy. “The fact that we were able to get through that and play a stronger match today shows that we made progress and we look to get better throughout the season. “

ASU jumped to an early lead in the first set with a pair of kills by Whitney Follette and a kill by Macey Gardner pulling ahead 9-5. At 12-8, UTEP scored on a kill by Jacqueline Cason and a block assists and an Arizona State attack error to make it 12-10. ASU was still up by a pair at 13-11, but back-to-back kills by the Miners tied the set at 13-13. UTEP wasted no time going on a 4-0 run to yet again tie the set at 17-17. Both teams battled for control, but in the end UTEP prevailed with an ace by Victoria Valancia and a kill by Horton to seal the set 25-23.
Horton once again helped UTEP take the lead recording a kill and an ace to put the Miners up by two.. Both squads struggled to take the lead three straight kills by Cason and Cassandra Burruel gave the Miners a 16-13 advantage. Two UTEP kills followed by two Sun Devil errors put the Miners up 20-14, forcing an ASU timeout. The lead would be short-lived though as ASU scored the final three points with a pair of kills by Wilson.
The Miners lead for the first half of the third set until an attack error by Cason tied the frame at 15-15. Both teams went back and forward and as the Sun Devils begin to pull away, UTEP recorded a pair of kills a block to put the Miners within two at 23-21.ASU would not relent though and went on a 3-1 to close the set 26-24.
UTEP was in the second set for a brief moment, but a long ASU run turned it into a rout. Down 22-13, the Miners received two straight kills by Cason and Bridget Logan to put the score at 22-14. UTEP again got close, going on a 6-0 run with four strikes from Horton but UTEP could not hold on and ended up dropping the set 25-21.

Juniors Jeane Horton and Xitlali Herrera paced the Miners posting 13 and 12 kills, respectively. Herrera registered a .429 hitting efficiency and added six digs in UTEP’s three-set loss to Idaho State on Saturday. Set scores were 25-19, 27-25, and 25-21.
The Bengals had an early 5-1 lead until consecutive ISU errors put the Miners within two at 7-5. Down 10-5, setter Malia Patterson went to service line and helped put the Miners on the board. Duo Horton and Herrera hammered the ball to place UTEP at 10-9. The Miners would not back down, with back-to-back Bengal errors and two kills by Jacqueline Cason, gave UTEP a 14-11 advantage. However, ISU mirrored with a 6-1 run and took the lead, 17-15. The Miners were unable to recover and dropped the set 25-19.
Horton blasted the ball to put the Miners on the board. Three Bengal errors made it 7-5 and two Miner kills extended the lead to 8-6. Both teams exchanged points until ISU made a 4-1 run to make the score 14-12. UTEP would not relent going on a run lead by senior Cassandra Burruel with a block and a kill to put the Miners up 17-15. Herrera posted two kills to give the Miners a two-point lead, but the Bengals fought back and scored the last two points of the set to take it 27-25.
The Miners took an early lead in the third stanza with a pair of kills from Herrera to open the set 4-2. Both squads went back and forward until a pair of block assists from and two kills from Tressa Lyman gave ISU a 17-13 lead. The Bengals would not give up the lead and took the third set 25-21.
UTEP will travel to San Antonio, Texas to face Belmont and UTSA in the UTSA Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Miners will first take on Belmont at 11 a.m. and Saturday they will take on UTSA at 5:30 p.m.
