UTEP Battles Charlotte into Five Sets

The UTEP volleyball team fell short in a competitive five-set match against Charlotte (25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 23-25, 15-12) on Sunday afternoon in Memorial Gym. The Miners are now 6-19 overall, and 4-10 in conference play.

Sophomore Lindsey Larson and freshman Coline Coessens directed the Orange and Blue’s efforts as they both notched double-doubles. Larson paced the Miner offense with 45 assists while tallying 16 digs. Coessens boasted a match-high 23 kills and chipped in 12 digs.

Aiding the Miner defense was sophomore Dominique Millette as she recorded three solo and seven assisted blocks leading UTEP to a team total 14 blocks.

UTEP notched the first two points of the match, but Charlotte would steal the Miners’ short lead off a11-2 rally, bringing the score to 14-4. Limiting the Miners to only seven kills, Charlotte would maintain its advantage and take the first set, 25-18.

The squads would open the second frame in a point for point battle as they tied the score five times. Knotted at 6, two UTEP errors would allow Charlotte to take the lead off a 4-1 rally. The 49ers would extend their advantage with a 9-1 run, winning the set, 25-17.

The third set was a seesaw battle through the first 17 points. With the match on the line, Coessens sparked along the net to ignite a 3-1 rally for the Miners. UTEP kept its momentum going as it commanded three consecutive Charlotte errors. Freshman Dalainee Perry sealed the set win for the Miners with back-to-back kills.

Finding an offensive rhythm, UTEP opened the fourth set with a 7-3 lead, forcing Charlotte into a time out.

Regrouped, the 49ners came off the timeout to tie the Miners at 10. As the pressure mounted,the squads went point for point, tying nine times. 

With the score set at 23, Coessens would hammer out her 18th kill of the night to give UTEP the lead. The freshman would then team up with Millette for a unbreakable block to give the Miners the set, 25-23.

Much like the previous two sets, the teams would open the fifth and final frame in a battle for points. Knotted at 10, two UTEP errors would give Charlotte its first lead in the set. Fearless Coessens would fire out one more kill to but it would be 49er Irem Asci who would dominate along the net, taking the set and the match for Charlotte, 15-12.
