DALLAS, Texas - The UTEP women's tennis team won its fifth match in the last six after taking down Sam Houston State, 6-1, on Friday afternoon at the Northwood Country Club.
The Miners (6-6, 2-0 Conference USA) kept multiple winning streaks alive heading into Saturday's match against SMU (2 p.m. MT).
"The team did a great job today," first-year head coach Myriam Sopel said. "But the team is fired up and is looking forward to SMU. It's a great opportunity to show how strong we are and the team wants show that they can compete with them."
Marie LeBlond won her sixth straight match after defeating Kayla Stevenson, 6-2, 6-3, on the No. 3 court, while Rebeca Calvillo also extended her winning streak to six, taking down Olivia Battye, 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 1 position.
Gabi Vazquez won her fifth straight match over Maddie Mortimore at the No. 4 spot, while Davina Meza and Daphne Visscher have each won three straight. Meza outmatched Imke Jagau, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 and Visscher beat Natalie Pataia, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) at No. 5.
Matilda Rose Tench suffered the team's only loss - but was on the winning end of a doubles match.
Tench and Vazquez kept their undefeated doubles record (6-0) intact, besting Jagau and Stevenson, 8-3, on the No. 2 court. Calvillo and Meza won their seventh straight, defeating Battye and Petaia, 8-3, at No. 1. The tandem is now 8-2 during the spring season (16-7 overall). LeBlond and Visscher improved to 4-2.
UTEP will also face No. 69 North Texas on Sunday (10 a.m.).
