DALLAS, Texas - The UTEP women's tennis team could not get over the .500 mark, losing to SMU, 5-2, on Saturday at the Northwood Country Club.
Rebeca Calvillo and Marie LeBlond stayed hot, as the two seniors notched their seventh straight win in dual-match singles play.
Calvillo took down Vaszilisza Bulgakova, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 1, while LeBlond defeated Dasha Sharapova, 6-2, 7-5, on the No. 3 court. Davina Meza and Gabi Vazquez fell short in three sets. Hristina Dishkova got by Meza, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4, at No. 2, and Yana Erkeeva edged Vazquez, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, at the No. 4 spot.
The Mustangs (3-8) gained the early advantage by squeaking by the Miners (6-7, 2-0 Conference USA) for the double point.
Bulgakova and Sharapova ended Calvillo's and Meza's seven-match winning streak, 8-5. LeBlond and Visscher came up short to Holly Verner and Dishkova, 8-7, while Matilda Rose Tench and Vazquez lost their first doubles match since being teamed up, 8-5.
The Miners take on new C-USA member No. 69 North Texas on Sunday (10 a.m. MT).
