El Paso, Texas – UTEP performed at a very high level Friday evening at the Chamizal National Park. For the second consecutive week, junior Anthony Rotich and freshman Joan Jepkirui took home first-place finishes for their respective meets.
This marks the fourth race in a row that Anthony Rotich has won. Rotich got off to a quick start and never looked back. The junior finished the 6K with a time of 16:49.81.
Other Miners performed just as well, as UTEP took home the top-four spots, and five out of the top seven. Sophomore Cosmas Boit turned in a stellar time of 16:52.01 to take second place. Boit has taken second place in all three races he has competed in this year. Transfer Daniel Cheruiyot notched his best finish of the season as he came in third place with a time of 17:08.28. Not too far behind Cheruiyot lurked Elphas Maiyo, who claimed fourth place crossing the finish line at 17:28.09.
Evans Kiprono rounded out the Miners who finished in the top-10 with a seventh-place finish. The sophomore dashed through the finish line in a time of 17:48.28. Senior Ramon Garcia finished in 13th-place with a time of 19:32.86.
Joan Jepkirui took the number one spot with ease. The freshman won the race with a time of 20:02.71, 15 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Jepkirui has now finished in the top-5 in all four races she has competed in. Sophomore Truphena Sum registered another top-10 finish coming in fourth-place with a time of 22:02.97. This was her third top-10 finish.
Laura Delgado and Veronica Alvarez paced each other and finished in 12th and 13th-place respectively. Delgado finished just a hair under 24 minutes, while Alvarez finished in 24:24.56. Rounding out the effort, freshman Lilliana Valdespino finished in 20th-place with a time of 27:22.47.
UTEP will now focus its efforts on their biggest meet of the year thus far. The Miners will head to Fayeteville, Ark., to compete in the Chili Pepper Festival. This event will have runners from over 80 different schools, so the competition will be a bit stiffer. The Chili Pepper will take place next Saturday, Oct. 4. The men (8K) will run at 8:45 a.m. (MT) and the women (5K) will compete at 9:20 a.m.
