ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The UTEP women's tennis team lost the doubles point to Grand Canyon, but the Miners (2-1) managed get out of the hole and take five of the six singles matches from the Lopes (0-3), winning the match, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Linda Estes Tennis Center.
"I'm very proud of the way the team competed in singles today. Unlike yesterday , I felt like we did a much better job of embracing the big moments which helped us play our best tennis when it mattered," first-year head coach Cristina Moros said. "I thought we learned a lot from our loss yesterday and we made the necessary adjustments to be a better team today."
Duda Santos started the successful singles day with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Silvia Tumova at the no. 3 position. Jeannez Daniel, a day after defeating the no. 75 ranked player in the NCAA, took down Tatum Prudhomme, 6-3, 6-2, on the no. 2 court. Lois Wagenvoort notched the Miners' third point with a victory over Alex Petralkova, 2-6, 7-5, 6-4. At the no. 1 position, Davina Meza was triumphant over Priscilla Annoual, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Matilda Tench helped seal the win with a hard-fought 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) win at no. 6.
Meza and Santos defeated Annoual and Prudhomme, 7-6 (5), for the only doubles win.
"It's very motivating to get a win over a team that was a loss the previous year and hoping we can bring that confidence into our next matches," Moros added.
UTEP will return to the Sun City for a string of five consecutive home matches. The Miners will take Northern Colorado on Feb. 13 (Noon MT) and Sam Houston State on Feb. 15 (11 a.m.) at the El Paso Tennis Club.
