EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP women's tennis team won its first Conference USA match of the season, defeating UTSA, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the El Paso Tennis & Swim Club.

Senior caption Davina Meza was also honored, as the day was dubbed "Davina Day". UTEP also improves to 5-1 in the Sun City this spring.

"It's definitely a great feeling to finish the weekend off with a win against a very tough UTSA team," first-year head coach Cristina Moros said. "After being within three points of a victory against Wisconsin (on Feb. 27), we have talked a lot about owing the key moments of the match. We are doing a great job of that in certain positions and need to get better in others."

The Miners (6-2, 1-0 C-USA) took an early 1-0 advantage on the Roadrunners (6-4, 0-1) by winning the doubles point.

Meza and Duda Santos dominated Nicole Karaklis and S. Madroñal Medina 6-0 on the no. 1 doubles court. The Netherlands Connection of Daphne Visscher and Lois Wagenvoort clinched the point by besting Lina Hallgren and Daniela Garcia-Diaz, 6-2, at the no. 3 position.

"It is nice to see Duda and Davina really start to show what they are capable of in both singles and doubles," Moros said.

The duo of Meza-Santos improved to 6-1 during dual match doubles play - all on the no. 1 court.

Matilda Tench commenced the singles success by dropping Madroñal Medina, 6-2, 6-0, at the no. 6 spot. Meza put the Miners up 3-0 with a convincing, 6-3, 6-2, victory over Jacobea Junger on the no. 1 court. Santos clinched the overall triumph with a, 6-3, 6-4, win over Karaklis.

"There is no doubt we are improving as a team, and we need to keep making small important adjustments to play our toughest as we transition to the mid and last parts of our season," Moros added.

UTEP will hit the road again after playing five consecutive home matches. The Miners will play at Cal State Northridge on March 10 (3 p.m. MT) and at UC Riverside on March 12 (2:30 p.m.).
