2014-15 Tennis Season Stats
UTEP 4, NM State 3
Final Stats
UTEP rebounded from losing the doubles point to claim victory in four of six singles matches en route to taking down NM State in Las Cruces, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon.
The Miners (12-4) beat the Aggies (11-10) for the first time in four years while gaining a measure of revenge after dropping 4-3 heartbreakers to their I-10 rivals in each of the previous three seasons.
Daphne Visscher clinched the victory with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 triumph over Mia Brandt at no. 5 singles. Trailing 3-2, UTEP received wins from Visscher and Matilda Tench at the bottom of the lineup, spurring the comeback victory. Tench dispatched Marie-Pier Thiffault out of the no. 6 spot, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
"This gives us a lot of confidence to know that we lost one of our most consistent points all year in the doubles, but were still able to win the match against a very tough team," UTEP coach Cristina Moros said. "To see Daphne come through and close out that win when the pressure is at its highest was a big breakthrough for her. She won 12 out of the last 14 points, can't ask for much more than that."
Davina Meza and Duda Santos were victorious at no. 1 doubles for UTEP, beating the Aggies' Susana Alcaraz and Erika Castillo Lopez 8-4. Jeannez Daniel and Tench came up just short at no. 2 doubles, 8-6, to NMSU's Ashvarya Shrivastava and Denise Van Der Ben.
The Miners went to work in singles, as Santos squared the match at 1-1 by making quick work of Van Der Ben out of the no. 3 position, 6-1, 6-3.
UTEP went ahead 2-1 after Meza outlasted Shrivastava at no. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3.
However, NMSU rallied to build the 3-2 advantage with straight-set wins from Castillo Lopez and Alcaraz at no. 4 and no. 2 singles, respectively, setting the stage for Visscher and Tench to pull out the match with hard-fought victories.
The Miners continued their turnaround under first-year coach Moros. They were 12-13 a year ago. Now they'll look to extend their season at the Conference USA Championships April 16-19 in Houston, with the tournament pairings scheduled to be announced early in the week.
"We have done some different things in practice the last couple weeks which I think paid off today," Moros said. "Hopefully we can take this momentum into our conference tournament next week and believe that we can compete there."
