NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The UTEP men’s distance medley relay team set the school record while posting the nation’s second-fastest time (9:31.13) Friday night at the Music City Challenge.
The race started with Michael Saruni (2:53.2) in the 1200m run. Up next came Asa Guevara (47.6) in the 400m, who passed the baton to Emmanuel Korir (1:46.9) in the 800m. Anchoring the relay was Jonah Koech (4:03.6) in the 1600m. UTEP just edged out Virginia Tech (9:31.15) in a photo finish.
SEATTLE, Wash. – Antony Kosgei and Winny Koech set personal bests in the 5,000m at the Husky Classic.
Kosgei ran the nation’s 10th-fastest time in the nation with a time of 13:50.74 notching a first place finish. Teammate Koech notched 17th overall with a personal best 16:17.08.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Several Miners set personal bests to highlight the action for members of the UTEP Track & Field team Friday night at the Don Kirby Invitational.
Setting the bar high for herself, Florence Uwakwe notched a first-place finish in the 60 meter qualifying round with a time of 7.51.
In the weight throw Fayon Gonzales earned a ninth-place showing with a throw of 17.83m (58-06.00). Teammate Adebola Akomolafe placed 21st overall with a toss of 16.32m (53-06.50).
Rebecca Oshinbanjo earned a spot in 60 hurdles semifinals with a time of 8.68. Lucia Mokrasova finished 21st overall with a season best time of 8.85.
Ada Benjamin clinched bronze with a season-best 1:33.24 in the 600m. Imani Adams notched 13th with a time of 1:40.38.
On the men’s side, Donivan Ortega and Yinka Oyebanjo-Odofin finished first and second, respectively, in their heats in the 200 meters. Ortega set his personal best with a time of 22.17 and Oyebanjo-Odofin at 22.72.
James Bias and Brandon Moss both finished in 13th in their respective events. Bias ran 6.97 in the 60 meters, while Moss leaped out to 7.19m (23-07.25) in the long jump.
The Miners return to action Saturday to wrap-up the regular season.
