UTEP Track and Field to Headed to Albuquerque for Second Meet of the Year

EL PASO, Texas – UTEP track and field will take the short trek up to I-25 to compete in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque Friday, Jan. 19.

The Miners will be competing against 21 other schools, including the likes of Fresno State, Incarnate Word, N.M. State, North Texas, UCLA and Southern California.

Coming off an outstanding performance last week, sophomore Michael Saruni will compete in the 600m set for Friday at 6:55 p.m. MT. Saruni set a school and facility record at the Commodore Invitational in the 800m last week, running a time of 1:45.92. The Kenya native has another opportunity to break another record set by former teammate Emmanuel Korir (1:14.97).

Lilian Koech is also coming off a hot start to the season, clocking in at 4:45.62 in the mile run at the Commodore Invitational. Koech ranks eighth in the nation and No. 1 in Conference USA. The senior will take the track on Friday with a start time of 12:45 p.m.

Starting the action on Friday in the field events will be Dawn Blazer and Ceirra Chenault in the weight throw at 4 p.m. Benjamin Coronado will compete in the men's weight throw later in the day at 7 p.m.

Senior Lucia Mokrasova will compete in three events over the two-day competition. Mokrasova will begin with long jump Friday at 4 p.m. She will compete in her best event in the shot put at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by the 60m hurdles preliminaries at 10:15 a.m.

Asa Guevara will see action in both the 200m set for Friday at 7:35 p.m. and the 400m on Saturday at 1:35 p.m.  Jonah Koech will compete in the 600m alongside Saruni and in the mile run on Saturday starting at 12:25 p.m.
