Cross Country’s Linda Cheruiyot Named the Steve Hoy UTEP Athlete of the Week

EL PASO, Texas – UTEP cross country Linda Cheruiyot was named the Steve Hoy UTEP Athlete of the Week after claiming the title at the 2018 Air Force Conference USA Cross Country Championships on Oct. 27 in Boca Raton, Fla. She contributed to the Orange and Blue's first ever C-USA Cross Country title ever.

Cheruiyot is the first Miner to win the C-USA title since 2012 (Risper Kimaiyo). The Kenyan clocked in at 16:56.12 in the 5k with teammate Winny Koech following close behind and claiming second place.

This is the second title for the junior. Her first came earlier this season at the Joe Piane Invitational (9/28). The week following that race, she was named C-USA Athlete of the Week (10/2).

The Miners will travel to Provo, Utah, to compete at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships on Nov. 9. Going into the Region Championships, Cheruiyot is ranked 16th on FloXC.
