LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Senior
Vanessa Valdez put up a valiant fight in the main draw of singles play to highlight the action for the UTEP tennis team at the ITA Mountain Regional Tournament Thursday.
"Vane (
Vanessa Valdez) played great vs. the seventh seed in the top flight," UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez said. "She fought until the end but could not pull it out. I'm very proud of her effort and fight, especially with a hurt toe."
Vanessa Valdez turned in an incredible battle against seventh-seeded Monica Malinen (Colorado). She claimed the first set, 7-5, but dropped the final two sets, 7-5, 6-3, in a three-set affair.
Thássane Abrahim and
Erandi Martinez were tripped up by the tournament's seventh-seeded pairing of Izumi Asano/En-Pei Huang (UNLV), 8-2.
Lina Sáchica and
Eve Daniels battled only to fall, 8-6, to Anastaysha Gorbacheva/Carla Del Barrio (Nevada)
The Miners will be back on the courts at the event on Friday.
