UTEP Men’s Golf to Compete at John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawai’i


EL PASO, Texas – UTEP men's golf will tee off its second spring tournament at the John Burns Intercollegiate for a three-day event at Wailua Municipal Golf Course (par-72/6,991 yards) in Lihu'e, Kaua'i, Hawai'i Feb 21-23. The Miners commenced the spring session at the Arizona Intercollegiate Jan. 28-29.
 
The Miners will be joined by Arizona, no. 13 Arizona State, no. 24 BYU, CSUN, no. 2 Duke, Fresno State, Grand Canyon, host school Hawai'i, Long Beach State, New Mexico, North Carolina, Northern Colorado, Saint Mary's, no. 17 Texas A&M, UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara, UNLV, Virginia and Washington State.
 
Each day will have an 11 a.m. MT/8 a.m. HT shotgun start. Texas A&M won the tournament last year, while the Aggies' Chandler Philips is a two-time defending champion.
 
Making the trip to the island for UTEP Head Coach Scott Lieberwirth are sophomores Oskar Ambrosius and Santiago Castilla, junior Eduardo Gonzalez, seniors Settavut Paradee and Aaron Terrazas, and freshman Greg Yellin
 
At the Arizona Intercollegiate, Terrazas penciled in a solid third round and fired a 3-under par (70-72-68—210) to finish tied for 25th. Ambrosius got off to a hot start during the first two rounds. He finished the event shooting 1-under par (69-69-74—212) and tied for 32nd, while tallying 13 birdies during the two-day event.
 
Freshman Greg Yellin (69-75-71—215) placed tied for 45th and registered his best 54-hole score in his young career. Yellin's first round score of 69 was also a career low. Ben Getman (74-72-75—221) and Castilla (76-78-73—227) were the other Miners who competed in Tucson.
 
Gonzalez will play in his first event of the spring season after competing in the Lone Star Invitational, Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate and Pepsi-Cola Classic during the fall. Paradee will also get his first nod of the new semester after playing in the Lone Star, Paintbrush Invitational, Herb Wimberly and Pepsi-Cola tournaments the semester prior.
 
Overall, Terrazas has played in six tournaments, sporting a team-best 71.9 stoke average. Ambrosius has been solid on the links, registering a 73.2 stroke average in seven tournaments during the 2018-19 campaign.
