UTEP Volleyball To Co-Host Borderland Invitational

UTEP Volleyball To Co-Host Borderland Invitational

EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP volleyball team (2-1) will be co-hosting the Borderland Invitational this weekend (Sept. 6-8) with NM State in El Paso, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M.
 
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for kids. For more information about the team day program call the UTEP marketing department at (915) 747-6065.
 
The Miners will begin the Invitational at home in Memorial Gym Friday, Sept. 6 at 10 a.m. MT against Coppin State (2-2). Later in the evening, UTEP will play Texas A&M CC (1-2) at 7 p.m. MT.
 
The Orange and Blue will then hit the road to Las Cruces, N.M., to play Pacific (2-1) at 4 p.m. MT on Saturday.
 
There will also be a neutral site match played at Memorial Gym on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT between Coppin State and Texas A&M CC.
 
Coach Ben Wallis will have the opportunity to coach against his previous stop of six years in NM State (3-0) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT in Las Cruces, N.M.

Coppin State went 2-2 during the first weekend of play. Miajavon Coleman led the way for the Eagles with 59 kills and 4.21 kills per set. Brianna Lang posted 6.57 assists per set and 92 total assists.
 
Texas A&M CC posted a 1-2 record during opening play. The Islanders swept Houston with a strong outing from Kylie Filipiak, who amassed 11 kills on a .348 hitting percentage.
 
Pacific is 2-1 on the year, and is coming off of a 2018 campaign that resulted in a 125 RPI ranking. Kennedy Kaminsky has recorded 16 blocks in just 10 sets of play this season.
 
The Aggies were a top-50 RPI team in 2018, and are off to a strong 3-0 start to their season. They have not dropped a set. Megan Hart has 25 kills in nine sets with a scorching .500 hitting percentage.
 
Cheyenne Jones was dominant for the Miners, during the opening weekend of play. She recorded a career-high 24 kills in a five-set victory over UIW. The outside hitter was also named to the All-Tournament team for her stellar play.
 
Alex Torres was also selected to the All-Tournament team for her play at libero for the Orange and Blue. Torres also registered a career high against UIW, but digs was where she made her mark with 26 of them.
