UTEP vs. Marshall Game Notes

EL PASO – 
UTEP will aim to end a four-game losing skid as it plays host to Marshall on Saturday afternoon. The Miners (13-13, 4-9 Conference USA) and Thundering Herd (12-14, 6-7 C-USA) will tipoff at 2 p.m. in the Haskins Center. 
 
The Saturday afternoon contest can be heard on UTEP's flagship station 600 ESPN El Paso with "The Voice of the Miners" Jon Teicher and former UTEP basketball player Steven Yellen calling the action. The game will also be streamed on ESPN+ with El Paso Athletics Hall of Famer Duke Keith and UTEP basketball great Leonard Owens on the mic.

UTEP is coming off a 67-62 setback against WKU on Thursday night. The Miners battled, but the Hilltoppers made big baskets down the stretch. With UTEP down a point, 57-56, at the 3:34 mark, WKU outscored the Miners 10-6 as Taveion Hollingsworth accounted for seven of the last 10 points.
 
Souley Boum had an off-night at the foul line, shooting 4-for-8, but came up with a game-high 21 points and a career-high eight rebounds, while adding three assists. Boum's 87.9 percent free-throw shooting still ranks no. 1 in C-USA. Bryson Williams tallied season-high four assists and tallied 13 points with eight boards. Daryl Edwards followed with 10 points, while connecting on a pair of threes. Edwards has made a three-pointer in 11 consecutive contests, shooting 39.6 percent (27-74) during that span. Jordan Lathon led the Miners in assists (five), steals (three) and blocked shots (two). Lathon has tallied 24 assists his last six games (4.0 apg). 
 
Marshall fell at UTSA, 72-63, on Feb. 13. Taevion Kinsey led the way for the Thundering Herd with 27 points in 40 minutes of action. Jarrod West recorded a double-double (15 points, 10 rebounds), while dishing out five assists against the Roadrunners. The Herd led 38-34 at the half, but were outscored 38-25 in the second half. 
 
Kinsey leads Marshall at 16.2 points per game. He also ranks second in C-USA with 105 assists. West leads the league with 58 steals, while ranking 10th nationally, and ranks second in the league with 2.23 steals per game. Jannson Williams, a 6-9 forward, ranks second in C-USA at 1.46 blocked shots per game. 
 
Overall, the Thundering Herd ranks second in the league in steals per game (8.7) and total steals (226). Marshall's 5.9 blocked shots per game also rates second. The Herd averages 11.4 offensive rebounds per game, ranking second in C-USA, their 38.2 rebounds per contest is good for third. The Thundering Herd also ranks second in the conference in turnovers forced per game (15.9). 
 
BONUS PLAY INFORMATION 
UTEP's four remaining games (two home, two away) will be announced publicly on Sunday, Feb. 16. The Miners will be grouped in pod no. 3 with Rice (4-9 C-USA), Southern Miss (4-9) and Middle Tennessee (2-11). Earlier in league play, UTEP defeated Southern Miss, 76-64, on Jan. 9. The Miners also won their first road game in over year, winning at Rice, 72-64, on Jan. 23, while edging out Middle Tennessee, 67-66, on Jan. 30.
