EL PASO, Texas – The UTEP tennis team will get its first test on the road as the Miners head to Logan, Utah, for a pair of matches. UTEP will have a neutral-site match with Idaho State (2-3) at 10 a.m. MT Saturday and then play at Utah State (2-0) at 10 a.m. MT Sunday.
The Miners dropped matches to Abilene Christian (6-1) and New Mexico (4-1) to wrap up a season-opening three-match homestand, but were competitive in both contests.
Junior Lina Sachica brings along a perfect 3-0 record in dual play. Her great energy is something UTEP head coach
Ivan Fernandez hopes the rest of his team can match.
"We are very excited to be heading out on our first road trip of the season," Fernandez said. "We have two tough opponents in Utah State and Idaho State."
Senior
Vanessa Valdez (1-2) and junior
Erandi Martinez (1-2) will need to set the tone at the top of the line-up.
"We have been working on the things that we were lacking last weekend, and hopefully we can implement them this weekend," Fernandez said. "I have a lot of faith in this team, and I know good things are coming."
Freshman
Eve Daniels introduced herself with a strong showing vs. Western New Mexico, winning 6-1 in doubles with Sachica. She then cruised to a 6-0, 6-1, outcome in singles. Despite falling in both singles matches with Abilene Christian and New Mexico, Daniels and Sachica were rolling at 5-3 vs. New Mexico in doubles before the match was cut short.
"We just need to continue to work hard, trust our tennis, and the results will come," Fernandez said.
