UTEP Women’s Golf Heads to Compete in Hawaii Invitational

EL PASO, Texas – UTEP's Women's Golf team will travel to the island of O'ahu for this week's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, which is being hosted by the University of Hawaii.
 
The Miners will play 36 holes on Tuesday, March 10, to open the tournament, while the remaining 18 holes are scheduled for the following Wednesday. The 54-hole event is set to begin with an 8:05 a.m. HT (12:05 p.m. MT) shotgun start on both days of the event.
 
The two-day invitational will be held 72-par, 6,099-yard Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course.
 
The 16-team field includes Arizona State, Hawaii, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Montana State, Nevada, Ohio State, Osaka Gakuin (Japan), San Diego State, Seattle U, Stetson, TCU, UNC Ashville, Xavier and Yale.  
 
UTEP will send five golfers to this week's event, including Valeria Mendizabal (Jr., Guatemala City, Guatemala), Audrey Haddad (Jr., Geneva, Switzerland), Abbie Anghelescu (Sr., Wolfe Island, Ontario), Sophie Delfosse (Fr., Valenciennes, France) and Taylor Stone (Jr., Calgary, Alberta, Canada).
 

THE LAST TIME OUT
 
UTEP's Women's Golf team improved five spots on the leaderboard on the final day to finish fifth in the at the GCU Invite on Feb. 23
 
After finishing the first round in 10th place, the Miners shaved 11 shots off its team total in the final round to shoot 293 (+5) on the day and finish the event in fifth out of 14 teams.
 
UTEP finished the first day by shooting 304 (+16) as a team and ended the weekend at 21-over with a two-round team score of 597. Grand Canyon took home the team title after shooting even par (576) for the tournament.
 
The Miners were led by Valeria Mendizabal, who shot even par (72) on the last day to move up into a tie for eighth individually. Mendizabal shot 73 (+1) in the opening round to end the first round tied for 13th. Over two rounds, the junior from Guatemala shot 1-over with a score of 145 on the weekend.
