UTEP MBB Hosts FIU Saturday Night

UTEP vs. FIU Game Notes

EL PASO – The UTEP men's basketball team is looking for its first sweep of the season when it hosts FIU on Saturday night. The Miners and Panthers will tipoff at 7 p.m. in the Haskins Center.
 
UTEP (9-10, 5-8 Conference USA) pushed FIU's (9-13, 2-11 C-USA) losing streak to 10 games in league play after its 75-59 win on Friday night. After being down a point (21-20) at the midway point of the first, the Miners responded with an 18-3 run to distance themselves from the Panthers and never trailed again. 
 
The Miners and Panthers will be streamed on ESPN+ with Erik Elken (play-by-play) and Leonard Owens (analysis) on the call. Fans can listen to "The Voice of the Miners" Jon Teicher call the action in his 40th season on the home of UTEP Basketball 600 ESPN El Paso and the UTEP Miners app. 
 
Souley Boum led all scorers with 22 points on Friday night, shooting 5-of-7 from downtown, and recorded three assists. Keonte Kennedy scored 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Christian Agnew was the third Miner to hit double figures with 12 on a 5-of-6 effort from the foul line. Agnew also dished out a season-high three assists. Kristian Sjolund came off the bench and went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc, scoring nine points. Tydus Verhoeven scored five points with four rebounds and a season-high three assists. 
 
The Miners shot a season-high 50.0 percent (12-24) on 3-pointers and tied their season best with 12 made threes. Overall, UTEP shot 49.1 percent, making 27 field goals on 16 assists. The Miners forced 16 turnovers to their 11. UTEP ranks second and 22nd nationally in turnovers per game (10.9). 
 
UTEP held Antonio Daye Jr. to nine points after coming into the ball game averaging 18.0 points per game. Boum is now ranked fourth in the league in scoring (18.2 ppg), while Daye Jr. (17.6 ppg) dropped to fifth.
 
Eric Lovett and Javaunte Hawkins each led FIU with 11 points, while Isaiah Banks added 10 points. The Panthers shot over 43 percent from the field and hit 11 threes on 39.3 percent shooting. The Miners committed 11 fouls as FIU was only 4-of-8 from the foul line. 
 
FIU leads the nation in made three-point field goals (235) and three-point field goal attempts (689).
