UTEP at UAB Game Notes

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UTEP men's basketball team will face UAB again on Saturday afternoon. The Miners and Blazers are set to tip off at 3 p.m. MT in Bartow Arena.

UAB (15-2, 8-1 Conference USA) extended its winning streak to five after defeating UTEP (8-9, 4-7 C-USA), 63-51, on Friday night. The Blazers improved to 12-1 at home, while the Miners dropped to 2-7 on the road.

The Miners and Blazers will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on the home of UTEP Basketball 600 ESPN El Paso and the UTEP Miners app with "The Voice of the Miners" Jon Teicher calling the action.

Souley Boum extended his streak of scoring 20 or more points to five games after tallying a game-high 22 points against the Blazers on Friday night. Boum added five rebounds and three assists. Boum is the first Miner to post 20 or more points in five consecutive games since Randy Culpepper did so back in 2011 (Feb. 19 – March 2). Stefon Jackson did it in 12 consecutive games in 2009 (Feb.11 – March 25). Boum ranks fourth in C-USA in scoring (18.0 ppg).

Bryson Williams hit double figures, scoring 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor. Williams led the Miners with eight rebounds and added a steal. Kristian Sjolund (five), Keonte Kenney (four) and Jamal Bieniemy (one) were the only other Miners to score points.

UTEP blocked a season-high six shots, however, UAB blocked eight shots, a season high allowed by the Miners.

The Blazers' defense was too much for the Miners as they shot only 33.9 percent from the field, including a 3-for-20 night from the three-point line. Trey Jemison posted a double-double (14 points, 13 rebounds) and blocked four shots. Quan Jackson came off the bench to lead UAB with 18 points. UAB's bench outscored UTEP's, 24-5, while the Blazers beat the Miners on the boards (43-32) and in the paint (42-32).
