C-USA Leader Rice Tops UTEP 2-0

HOUSTON, Texas – Squaring off with the leaders in Conference USA, UTEP dropped a 2-0 decision at Rice on Thursday night.

The game featured multiple oddities early, including a power outage over part of the field that the teams played through and a lightning delay prior to halftime.

For the Owls (8-7, 6-0 C-USA), Grace Collins scored both goals in the win.

Collins started the offense in the sixth minute after Delaney Schultz found her on a thru ball. The pass set her up for an attempt that she would place into the right side.

Early in the second half, Collins struck again, delivering her sixth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Kallie McKinney created the opportunity by sliding a pass to Collins down the right side. Collins then dribbled past a defender and fired a left-footed shot into the lower-left corner of the net to make it 2-0 in favor of the Owls.

The Miners (3-9-3, 0-5-2 C-USA) generated eight shots on the night, including three in the final 2:02 of game action. Sophia Lewis led the attack with four shots, with her most dangerous look coming in the 88th minute on a dart that would sail over the net.

Vanessa Cabello took her first shot of the season for the Miners in the 89th minute.

Overall, Rice posted a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in shots on goal. The Owls had eight corners to one for the Miners.

Bella Killgore made two saves for Rice on the way to working her fifth shutout of the season.

UTEP is back in El Paso on Sunday at noon to host Middle Tennessee at University Field.
