UTEP to Host Free Admission Game Against North Texas

EL PASO, Texas – With two weeks remaining in the regular season, UTEP soccer remains alive for one of the final spots in the 2022 Conference USA Championship.
 
The Miners (4-9-3, 1-5-2 C-USA) will host North Texas (9-5-2, 5-2-1 C-USA) on Sunday at 1 p.m. MT at University Field.
 
In the current standings, UTEP trails Charlotte for the eighth and final spot in the conference tournament by two points. The 49ers take on FIU this Sunday at home before traveling to WKU for the regular season finale next week. Florida Atlantic, WKU and UTSA are all within striking distance for the Miners at the moment as well. The Roadrunners and Miners will square off in San Antonio next Friday in the final game of the season.
 
FREE ADMISSION
Admission is free for all fans for the game on Sunday. Free tickets can be claimed on the UTEP Ticketmaster Portal. All former Miners are encouraged to come out to the game as the program celebrates its history.
 
GAME COVERAGE
A live stream of the game against North Texas will be provided on CUSA.tv. Live stats will be offered on the UTEP SIDEARM Stats Portal.
 
ABOUT NORTH TEXAS
North Texas has routinely been one of the top teams in C-USA, with the 2022 team currently residing in third in the league standings. The Mean Green have posted 28 straight winning seasons and had a 65-match home conference unbeaten streak snapped earlier this season in a 1-0 loss to Florida Atlantic. Overall, North Texas has outscored the opposition 37-18 on the campaign with a 286-146 edge in shots. Seven players have tallied three or more goals for the squad, led by Olivia Klein with nine goals and four assists. Madi Drenowatz and Kat Burnell each have found the back of the net five times this season. Taylor Tufts has created numerous opportunities with seven assists and has added four goals. Madi Starrett is another dynamic creator with five assists. Freshman keeper Dani Jacobson is the first freshman goalkeeper to start a match for UNT in the last 11 seasons and has a 0.99 goals against average with 32 saves on the year. She has paved the way for six shutouts.
 
SERIES HISTORY
The Mean Green lead the all-time series 8-1-1. The win for UTEP came on Aug. 27, 2005 by a 2-1 tally in El Paso and the tie was a 1-1 draw in 2021, also at University Field.
 
INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES
Last week, UTEP moved in the right direction on the shot totals, generating eight against C-USA leader Rice on Thursday and outshooting Middle Tennessee 10-9 on Sunday.
 
CABELLO CREATING OFFENSE FROM THE BACK LINE
Defender Vanessa Cabello generated each goal in the 2-0 win over Middle Tennessee last week from the back line. The two assists marked the first multi-assist game of her career.
 
SOPHIA SCORES
In her first season as a Miner, graduate student Sophia Lewis scored the first goal of her career in UTEP colors in the 28th minute against the Blue Raiders. She missed much of the early season due to injury and has worked her way back into a starting spot.
 
RODRIGUEZ UP FRONT
Freshman Mina Rodriguez has been an important piece of the puzzle for the Miners from the forward spot this season, tallying two goals with three assists. Her most recent goal came in the fourth minute last week against Middle Tennessee.
 
SCOTT RANKINGS UPDATE
Goalkeeper Mariah Scott is third in C-USA with 62 saves and 4.31 saves per game. Her five shutouts ranks fifth.  
 
CARLIN CAREER STATS
During her time as a Miner, Tessa Carlin has scored 12 goals over the course of 46 games played, including 45 starts. Four of those have been game-winning goals. She also has accumulated 10 assists.
 
CONSISTENT STARTERS
Tessa Carlin, Cayman Tamez and Mariah Scott have each started all 16 games for the Miners this season.
 
C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP INFORMATION
The 2022 C-USA Women's Soccer Championship will take place Nov. 2-6 at Charlotte. The top eight teams in the final league standings will participate in the event. 
 
UP NEXT
UTEP closes out the regular season next Friday at UTSA. The game is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. MT/7 p.m. CT.
