UTEP Ends Season With Physical 1-0 Loss at UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A physical contest featuring a combined seven cards and 20 fouls ended with a 1-0 UTSA win over UTEP on Friday night.

The game marked the season finale for the Miners (4-11-3, 1-7-2 C-USA), who kept the pressure on right until the end in an effort to even the score late.

Sophia Lewis and Taya Lopez each generated shot attempts in the 86th minute, with UTSA (9-5-4, 4-3-3 C-USA) keeper Jil Schneider stopping both to preserve the win. The shot for Lopez was especially dangerous and was punched out by Schneider.

Earlier in the game in the 60th minute, Lewis created space for herself and had a quality shot attempt go high.

In addition to the shots, the Miners also posted a dangerous look in front of the net with 15 seconds left that resulted in a collision in front of the net, though nothing would come of the opportunity.

For the Roadrunners, the lone goal of the game came in the 19th minute following a foul just outside the box. The free kick by Marlee Fray bounced off keeper Mariah Scott, with Anna Sutter following the miss and taking a shot of her own to make it a 1-0 score.

Scott made four saves in the first half and Alaina Gilbert celebrated her birthday with a clean sheet in the second half for the Miners in net.

UTSA took 15 shots to eight for the Miners, with each team generating five shots on frame.

Lewis paced UTEP with three shots and Tessa Carlin had a pair of her own.
