Miners Score Final 16 Points in 67-54 Conquering of Spartans

Game Book

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. –
UTEP scored the final 16 points of the game on the way to a 67-54 victory over San Jose State on Friday afternoon in the Mott Athletics Center, giving head coach Kevin Baker the 200th win of his collegiate career.

Baker has accumulated 78 wins with the Miners, 72 with UT Tyler and 50 at Angelo State. Including the high school level, he has 422 overall wins as a head coach.

Trailing 52-46 early in the fourth quarter, the Miners (5-0) put down the clamps on San Jose State (1-4), capping the contest on a 21-2 run and keeping the Spartans off the board for the final 7:03 of game action. San Jose State missed its final 12 shots of the game.

"Today we learned to play through adversity, and I'm very proud of our team for that," Baker said. "We got off to a bad start and had to fight back for 40 minutes. Finally we hit some key shots and made some big plays to get some separation late in the fourth. I'm glad we made the trip. This is just what our team needed."

Early on, San Jose State raced out to an 11-0 start. After missing their first two shots, the Spartans would then hit five in a row, as Marisa Davis-Jones scored the first two points and Jada Holland the next eight as part of the stretch. A free throw by Jasmine Singleton marked the final point of the onset to the game.

Holland was the high scorer for San Jose State with 20 points, five rebounds and three steals.

UTEP would take the lead for the first time with an Avery Crouse layup to make it 24-23 with 3:09 left in the first half. The Crouse basket bookended a 7-0 run in which the Miners would begin to find success on the offensive end.

A high-effort sequence in the third quarter helped to build more momentum.

Trailing 31-28, Adhel Tac drew a foul and split her free throws. N'Yah Boyd would then haul down the miss on the back-end attempt for UTEP. With the second chance, Jazion Jackson missed a triple that was grabbed for yet another offensive rebound resulting in a Crouse triple for the lead on the third opportunity.

The Miners remained in good position throughout much of the third quarter until a 10-0 San Jose State run turned a 42-39 UTEP lead into a 49-42 edge for the Spartans.

Needing a rally down 54-51 with just over seven minutes to go, Jackson converted on a fast break layup and Crouse netted five straight points to spark the 16-0 finish to the contest to put the Miners on top for good.

For the second straight game, Jackson netted 18 points, equaling her season high. She would also bring down seven rebounds with three steals.

Jackson was joined by three teammates in double figures, including Boyd with 12 points and eight boards and Crouse with 10 points and three rebounds.

In her return to action after missing the last three games, Elina Arike had 13 points and five rebounds on a 5-of-6 performance from the field.

Once again in the starting lineup, Tac contributed seven points with six rebounds.

UTEP shot 24-of-56 (42.9 percent) from the floor, highlighted by a 14-of-27 (51.9 percent) clip in the second half.

The Spartans posted a nearly identical 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) mark from the field but were held to a 1-of-13 (7.7 percent) effort on perimeter shots.

Following the win, UTEP returns to action on Saturday at noon PT/1 p.m. MT to take on Sacramento State in the final day of the Holiday Beach Classic hosted by Cal Poly.
