Miners Fall 2-1 in Heartbreaker at Southern Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah – Southern Utah broke a tie in the 85th minute to squeak by UTEP 2-1 on Thursday afternoon at Thunderbird Soccer Field.

Facing off with the highest-scoring team in the nation entering the day, the Miners (0-3) kept within striking distance throughout, highlighted by holding NCAA goal leader Sammie Sofonia to just one shot.

SUU (4-0) did take the advantage early though, as Whitney Wangsgard found the net for the third time this season in the seventh minute.

Trailing 1-0, the Miners ramped up their efforts on the defensive side of the pitch over the remainder of the first half, giving the visitors a chance to make things interesting later in the contest.

Needing a spark on the offensive end, UTEP evened things up at 1-1 in the 77th minute when Justice Tillotson followed a rebound to net her first career goal. Eve Barry was credited with the assist on the play.

The Thunderbirds then answered back in the 85th minute with a Hailey Hamataka strike on a penalty kick to secure the win. The four straight wins to begin the year is the best start in SUU program history.

UTEP next plays at UNLV on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. MT.
