Aggies Score Trio of Goals to Top Miners in Las Cruces

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – NM State scored in the fourth minute and never looked back on the way to a 3-0 victory over UTEP on Thursday night.

The Aggies (1-2-1) capitalized on a beautiful looping pass from the right side by Sofia Beerworth that found Xitlaly Hernadez for a header right in front of the net to take the 1-0 lead four minutes in.

NM State was aggressive on the attack throughout, totaling 19 shots, including seven on frame.

For the Miners (1-4), goalkeeper Mariah Scott made four saves on the night to keep it close deep into the contest. Perhaps the most impressive save for Scott came in the 54th minute when she dove full extension to bring in a rocket from directly in front of the net off the foot of McNeese.

In the 78th minute, the Aggies won a 50-50 ball in the UTEP half and turned it into a dangerous opportunity in front of the net for McNeese that she would convert to make it 2-0.

An insurance goal was added by NM State in the 85th minute by Beerworth.

The Aggies posted a 6-3 edge for the game on corners while limiting the Miners to two shots.

UTEP plays at Wyoming on Sunday at 11 a.m. before returning home for four straight starting on Thursday, Sept. 8 against UIW.
