Miners Claim Third at MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial

FINAL RESULTS

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – UTEP women's golf placed four of five golfers in the top-15 on the way to a third-place team finish at the MSU/Payne Stewart Memorial at Rivercut Golf Course on Tuesday.

By taking third, the Miners secured the best team finish for the program since wrapping up the Aggie Invitational third out of 17 teams during the 2019 season in Las Cruces, N.M.

UTEP capped the tournament off with an 882 (295, 297, 290) as a team while displaying strong consistency, including the final round yielding the best numbers collectively for the squad.

Individually, freshman Nawel Ben Letaief made an immediate impact in her first competition at the collegiate level, finishing seventh with a 4-over par 220 (73, 75, 72).

Each UTEP participant completed tournament play in the top-30. Sophie Delfosse posted a 222 (76, 71, 75), Marta Romeu Chen a 223 (75, 76, 72), Daniela Chipchase a 223 (71, 78, 74) and Andrea Ostos a 226 (79-75-72). Delfosse finished tied for 11th while Chipchase and Romeu Chen tied for 13th. Ostos ended the event tied for 29th. The Miners last had five participants in the top-30 in the fall of 2018 at the Aggie Invitational.

Romeu Chen led the Miners with 10 birdies overall.

For Chipchase, the 71 in the first round on Monday marked a career-best round.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team," UTEP Head Coach Steve Sims said. "They put themselves in position to win this tournament, played their hearts out and had fun while doing it. It's a great kick-start to our season and we are all excited to head to the next event and see what we can do."

Oklahoma City was declared the team champion by virtue of winning a scorecard tiebreaker over Missouri State. Maddie Kamas of Oklahoma City took home the individual title with a 1-under par 215 (74, 73, 68).

Next up on the schedule for the Miners is the Bearkat Invitational hosted by Sam Houston on Sept. 26-27.
