UTEP Finishes Non-Conference Play Hosting UIW and Nevada

EL PASO, Texas – After wrapping up a five-game road trip last week that was the longest for the program since 2012, UTEP soccer returns home this week to start a stretch of four straight at University Field.
 
The Miners (2-4) will be taking part in their final two non-conference games before Conference USA action gets underway next week.
 
UTEP takes on UIW (1-2) Thursday at 7 p.m. before welcoming in Nevada (1-2-1) for a Sunday matinee at 1 p.m.

ABOUT UIW
The Cardinals are coming off their first win of the season, a 4-1 handling of Texas Southern at home last Sunday. Sierra Wannamaker led the charge for UIW with a hat trick in the win. The San Antonio product scored five goals with three assists for the team last year. Keeley Ayala has two goals of her own this season and Meredith Caviglia has scored one as well. Makenzie Hall started the last game for the Cardinals in goal and faced three shots with a save and one goal allowed. Margaret Kofron had started the prior two tilts, yielding eight goals and making 13 saves. UIW went 9-10-2 overall and 7-4-1 in conference last season. Marc Verriere Costa is the interim head coach for the squad.
 
ABOUT NEVADA
Nevada enters the week 1-2-1 following a 3-0 victory the last time out at home against Sacramento State last Sunday. After being named to the 2021 All-Mountain West Freshman Team, Emily Rich became the first player in Nevada women's soccer history to record three assists in a single match in the win over the Hornets. Luz Arreaga netted two of the goals in that match and has also assisted on two goals this season. Arreaga was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Nevada accumulated 14 points in MWC play last season which was the best performance for the program in league action since joining the conference in 2012. From that team, the Wolfpack returned eight starters and their top-four leading scorers. Following the 5-11-2 overall and 4-5-2 conference record in 2021, Nevada was picked to tie for ninth with Wyoming in the MWC Preseason Coaches' Poll.
 
SERIES HISTORY
UTEP has won four straight in the head-to-head series over UIW by a combined tally of 10-0 and holds a 4-1 edge overall. The Cardinals have not won over the Miners since Sept. 3, 2001 by a score of 3-1 in the Miner Classic. The Miners are 2-1 in El Paso against their in-state foe. UTEP has never lost to Nevada, posting a 6-0-1 mark overall and outscoring the Wolfpack 22-5.
 
TWO FOR TESSA
With two goals in the win at Wyoming last Sunday, Tessa Carlin put together the first two-goal game of her career. The product of Winnipeg, Canada now has 10 goals during the course of her time as a Miner.
 
LOPEZ NETS FIRST CAREER GOAL
After scoring 102 goals as a prep at Las Cruces High School, Taya Lopez found the back of the net for the first time collegiately in the 29th minute at Wyoming. She wasted little time getting involved in the offense after checking in off the bench, launching in the goal less than two minutes after entering. Lopez also contributed an assist in the win.
 
FIRST UTEP ASSISTS
The trio of Mina Rodriguez, Tori Paul and Raquel Houston each recorded their first assists as Miners during the win at Wyoming.
 
UTEP VS. THE MOUNTAIN WEST
The Miners are 2-0 against Mountain West foes this season after wins at UNLV and at Wyoming.
 
LONG ROAD TRIP
UTEP went 2-3 on the recent five-game road trip that saw the Miners play in five states and three different time zones spanning from Aug. 21-Sept. 4.  
UP NEXT
The Miners remain home to begin C-USA play next week, hosting the 915 Game against FIU on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. UTEP then takes on LA Tech on Sunday at 1 p.m.
