EL PASO, Texas– The UTEP soccer program (1-10-2, 0-3-1 CUSA) lost 1-0 to Jacksonville State (6-5-2, 1-1-2 CUSA) in a tight matchup Sunday at University Field. Miner keeper
Angelina Amparano recorded her first career start for the Miners.
Â
The Orange and Blue held the edge over the Gamecocks 11 to eight in total shots, but the visitors record one more try on goal (four to three). The Miners had one more corner kick (four to three), and both netminders grabbed three saves apiece.
Â
"I think it is hard that we make one bad mistake, and they capitalize on it. Then, really the reason we got the chances we got was because we were chasing the game," Head Coach
Gibbs Keeton said. "We have to do more when we are dominating the game to impact the game. We have to stay the course. We play at home again next Saturday, and it's the same objective. It's playing for points. We are going to show up and do our best and put our best players out there to do what they can."
Â
The Miners opened the game by successfully fending off two Jax State corners in the opening 12 minutes. Shortly after that,
Taya Lopez and
Olivia Roskos both fired off shots for the Miners in the 14th minute. Lopez's shot was blocked by the defense and Gamecock keeper Bailey Dean made the save on the follow up from Roskos. UTEP didn't let up on the pressure after that.
Â
In the 16th minute
Vanessa Cabello's try went wide, and then Lopez forced a save from Bailey Dean in the 17th. Vanessa Mejia had a try for Jax State sail over the bar in the 23rd minute. The Miners would have two corner kick chances in the 24th and 30th minutes, respectively, but were unable to capitalize. In the 34th minute, Anna Holl had a shot inside the box and Naroa Domenech found the game winner for the Gamecocks in the ensuing chaos. Laleh Lonteen provided the assist on the goal. The visitors would have three more shots before the halftime whistle, but none were successful.
Â
Jax State managed two shots in the second half, from Domenech in the 62nd and Mejia in the 84th while UTEP tallied seven shots in the final period. In the 69th minute
Mina Rodriguez had two shots blocked by the Gamecock defense and
Ashlyn Neireiter had another that was saved by Dean. Two minutes later in the 71st, Lopez had another effort miss wide. In the 72nd minute, Dean brought down
Nicole Morales in the box and the Miners were awarded a penalty kick. The shot missed wide by just inches. In the 78th Roskos had shot go wide and in the 83rd
Sheyliene Patolo's effort was blocked by the opposing defense.
Â
Next, the Miners are slated for a Saturday night match when they welcome WKU at 7 p.m. MT.
