EL PASO – UTEP Football Head Coach Scotty Walden announced the hire of Chad Johnson the Miners' director of Texas recruiting on Wednesday.

Johnson joins Walden's staff following an extensive high school coaching career in the state of Texas over the last two decades. Johnson will head up the recruiting efforts in The Lone Star State, identifying high school recruits and transfer portal student-athletes.

"Adding Chad to our staff was a big deal as he will lead our recruiting efforts in Texas," Walden said. "This includes not only high school recruiting but bringing players out of the portal back to their home state of Texas! I met Chad recruiting several years ago when I recruited the Houston area, and I was always impressed with how detailed and organized he was. I have always had him on my radar and now being back in the Lone Star State it was a no brainer to hire him. He will be instrumental in our commitment to recruit the best players from Texas!"

Johnson most recently worked at Willis High School (6A) in Willis, Texas, as the recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach from 2022-2023. Prior, he served as the assistant head coach, recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach at Spring High School (6A) in Spring, Texas, from 2010-2022. Johnson was the boy's athletic coordinator at Santa Fe Junior High School in Santa Fe, Texas, in 2006-07. Johnson started his coaching career at Alvin Junior High in Alvin, Texas, as the head boys basketball coach, head boys and girls swim coach, assistant defensive football coach and assistant track coach (2000-2006).

Johnson assisted over 150 football players in securing college scholarship opportunities, while he developed 33 defensive linemen into college football players in the last 14 years. He was on the staff at Spring HS that was recognized as the 2014 Dave Campbell's Texas Football U.S. Army 6A Team of the Year. His teams have won 76 percent of their games the last 10 years, while Spring HS won a school-record 11 games in 2015 and again in 2021. Willis HS won a school-record 12 games during the 2023 campaign.
