UTEP Welcomes LA Tech to University Field Saturday

EL PASO, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (3-7-3, 0-4-1 CUSA) hosts LA Tech (2-7-5. 0-4-2) Saturday evening at University Field. The Miners are looking to earn their first conference win against the Bulldogs.

The Miners fell 1-0 on October 12 in a tightly contested match at Jax State. UTEP defended tough throughout the game, but the Gamecocks scored the match winner in the 88th minute. Tionna Taylor made three saves in net for the Miners.
 
ANSWERING THE CALL
Tionna Taylor has delivered big time for the Miners since being called upon by head coach Gibbs Keeton. She has made 14 saves and allowed just three goals in four appearances. Against Liberty, she tallied eight stops, marking a season-high by a Miner keeper.
 
IRON WOMAN
Ashlyn Neireiter is the only Miner to start all 13 games this season. Not only that, she is also the only player to play more than 1,000 minutes across all competitions (1,158) so far. She has been on the field for all but 12 minutes of game time for UTEP.
 
ZOOMING OUT
UTEP is putting up quality numbers across the board this season. The Miners have taken more shots (157-128), shots on goal (57-54), and corner kicks (53-47) than opponents this year. Furthermore, UTEP has allowed only 12 goals in 13 games played.
 
DEFENSIVE MASTERCLASS
The Miner defense has locked down the opposition the last two games. Both Liberty and Jax State are averaging more than two goals per game, but each was held to one tally against UTEP. Additionally, the Miners kept both teams scoreless until the dying minutes of the match.
 
SETTING THE TONE
Ana Quintero leads or shares the team lead in multiple categories, including goals (four), points (eight),  shots (22), and shots on goal (nine).
 
IN THE RANKS
UTEP ranks 74th nationally in goals-against average (.923). Individually Angelina Amparano sits 80th in the same category (.905).
 
SHARING THE WEALTH
20 Miners have registered at least one shot this season. Five players have reached double-digit tries and 13 have five or more.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: LA TECH
The Bulldogs are 2-7-5 on the year and 0-4-2 in CUSA play. Four LA Tech are tied for the team lead in goals with two apiece; Emma Jones, Kalli Matlock, Dakota Merino, and Kyra Taylor. Maeva Costenaro has also put one in for the Bulldogs. Olivia Ewing provided the lone assist of the season for LA Tech. Taylor leads the team in shots (23) and shots on goal (12), followed by Matlock with 17 shots, including six on goal. Goaltending duties have been shared between Cadence Rutledge (42 saves, 11 goals against in nine appearances) and Sarah Melén (34 saves and 12 goals against in five appearances). Nationally, the Bulldogs rank 42nd in saves per game (5.64) while also sitting 30th in fewest fouls committed per game (7.00). Individually, Rutledge ranks 85th in the NCAA in saves per game (4.67).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE BULLDOGS
UTEP is 2-4-3 against LA Tech all-time. The last matchup between the squads ended in a 2-2 draw in Ruston, La., on 9/24/23.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Miners head back to Miami next Thursday (10/24) for the rescheduled matchup at FIU. Kickoff is set for 9 a.m. MT/ 11 a.m. ET.
 
After that the Miners return to the borderland for the final two matches of the 2024 regular season, first playing host to Sam Houston (10/27) before heading out to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on NM State in the Battle of I-10 (10/31).
