UTEP Soccer Travels to Liberty Thursday

The UTEP soccer team (3-5-3, 0-2-1 CUSA) faces off against Liberty (9-1-2, 1-1 CUSA) Thursday evening in Lynchburg, Va. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m. MT/ 6 p.m. ET.

UTEP slipped to 3-5-3, 0-2-1 in CUSA after a tough 2-0 loss to WKU on Sept. 29. While WKU fired off more shots than the Miners (14-13), UTEP held the advantage in shots on goal (7-5). The Hilltoppers took the lead in the 24th minute off a strike from Lily Rummo and doubled the advantage in the 40th when Olivia Cooke put in a penalty kick for the visitors. Mina Rodriguez led the Miners with four shots (two on goal) followed by Ana Quintero and Eve Barry with three (two and one on goal, respectively). Angelina Amparano and Tionna Taylor combined for three saves in the match.
 
HEY ALEXA, PLAY SHOTS BY LMFAO
UTEP has registered at least 10 shots in all but two matches this season, including tallying 20 or more in two contests. The Miners have outshot opponents 149-99 during the 2024 campaign, including 55-40 in shots on goal.

Ana Quintero leads the Miners in multiple categories, including goals (four), points (eight),  shots (21), and shots on goal (nine).
 
SHARPSHOOTER
Sheyliene Patolo shares the team lead in shots on goal (seven) and also tops the Miners in SOG% (.700, minimum three total shots).
 
CHANGES AT THE BACK
The Miners will have a new starting keeper against the Lady Flames, due to a red card (and subsequent one-game suspension) against Angelina Amparano against the Hilltoppers. Making the trip are senior Tionna Taylor (14 appearances) and junior Alaina Gilbert (two appearances).
 
IN THE RANKS
UTEP ranks 83rd nationally in goals-against average (.909). Individually Angelina Amparano sits 97th in the same category (.905).
 
FIRING SQUAD
Five Miners have posted double-digit shot attempts this season, led by Ana Quintero with 21. Mina Rodriguez (20), Eve Barry (12), Sheyliene Patolo (10) and Taya Lopez (10) round out the list.
 
LOOK AT ALLLLLL THOSE CORNERS
UTEP has earned more corner kicks than opponents in all but three contests this season. The Miners hold a 50-30 advantage in total corner kick attempts.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: LIBERTY
The Lady Flames are 9-1-2 in the 2024 campaign and 1-1 in CUSA. They have outscored opponents 28-9 on the year. Halle Engle leads the team with eight goals and has added one assist. Gabby Miranda sits second with four goals scored. Liberty has had 10 different goal scorers this season. Ivy Garner paces the team with five assists, followed by Avery Paulson and Sallie Garner with four apiece. Netminding duties have been split between Peyton Huber and Grace Workman. Huber has made 15 saves and allowed six goals against in 45 shots faced and Workman has made 15 saves and let in three goals in 38 shots faced.
 
Liberty is ranked in the top 100 nationally in multiple categories, including assists per game (2.08, 40th), goal differential (19, 20th), goals-against average (.750, 48th), points per game (6.75, 30th), and total goals (28, 22nd), among others. Individually, Engle is also ranked in multiple categories, including game winning goals (five, 2nd), goals per game (.67, 38th), points per game (1.42, 64th), shots per game (3.08, 86th), and total goals (eight, 15th). Ivy Garner is ranked nationally in assists per game (0.42, 75th), shots per game (3.08, 86th), and total assists (five, 35th). Sallie Garner and Avery Paulson are tied for 85th in total assists (four) while Workman sits 53rd in save percentage (.833).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE LADY FLAMES
The only matchup between the two sides resulted in a 2-1 loss for the Miners at home on 10/15/23 in Liberty's first season in CUSA.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UTEP continues its East Coast road trip Sunday (10/6) when they face FIU in Miami. Kickoff is slated for 11 a.m. MT/ 1 p.m. ET.
