UTEP Soccer Falls to FIU, 2-0

MIAMI – The UTEP soccer team (4-8-3, 1-5-1 CUSA) was upended by league-leading FIU 2-0 Thursday morning. Tionna Taylor made six saves in net for the Miners.
 
The hosts held the advantage in shots (12-6) and shots on goal (8-0). The UTEP defense successfully fended off four corners from the hosts.
 
The Panthers got on the board early in the first half when Brealyn Viamille slotted one past Taylor in the fourth minute. Anessa Barrera tried to even the score in the 28th minute missed the mark. Ally Stickney also had a chance in the 32nd minute, but her shot landed out of bounds.
 
Viamille scored her second of the day just after half off an assist from Noemi Paquin. The Miners amped up the pressure in the second frame, registering five shots. Anai Lopez and Hayden McMillan posted shots in the 51st and 52nd minute, respectively, but neither was on target.
 
Mina Rodriguez also put one in on goal in the 66th minute, while Ana Quintero had two tries late in the second half, but none found the target and FIU wound down the clock to earn the victory.
 
The Miners return to the Borderland for the final two matches of the 2024 regular season, first playing host to Sam Houston Sunday (10/27) before heading out to Las Cruces, N.M., to take on NM State in a Halloween edition of the Battle of I-10 (10/31).
