UTEP WBB Suffers 81-68 Setback Against BYU

EL PASO, Texas - The UTEP women's basketball team (4-2) fell to Big 12 member BYU (7-2) 81-68 Thursday night in the Don Haskins Center. Three Miners scored in double figures in the contest.

The Miners shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the field, 38.9 (7-18) from deep, and 76.0 percent (19-25) from the foul line in the contest. They grabbed 32 boards and posted 14 assists, four steals, and three blocks. The Orange and Blue committed just eight fouls in the game while drawing 22 from the Cougars.

Despite outearning BYU in bench points (23-9) and holding them to just two free throw attempts in the contest, points in the paint proved the biggest difference maker in the game, with BYU scoring 54 to UTEP's 26.

Ivane Tensaie dropped a team-high 21 points, including hitting five first-half threes. Ndack Mbengue recorded the first double-double of her DI career, posting a career-high in both points (14) and rebounds (11). She led both teams on the glass and also tallied a team-best two blocks.

Luisa Vydrova registered her second straight double-digit scoring effort, adding 14 points to the Miners tally. Delma Zita had a well-rounded game, totaling six points, six assists (a team-high), two steals, and one block.

"I thought our first half was good, we were right there in a two-possession game. We played pretty hard and were competing," Head Coach Keitha Adams said. "The biggest difference is their post play just tore us up. Their big had 27. Giving up 81 points can't be us, we need to be able to hang our hat on our defense."

The game started off at a furious clip, with BYU holding the 24-17 lead at the end of the first period. Ivane Tensaie drained three from beyond the arc to lead the Miners with nine points while Delma Zita tallied three assists.

The Miners tied the game at 28 and at 30 in the second quarter, but a 7-0 run by the Cougars to end the half put them back up 37-30. Tensaie led the field with 15 points at the break. Ndack Mbengue led all players with seven rebounds.

UTEP shot 35.5 percent (11-31) from the floor, 50.0 percent (5-10) from three, and 75.0 percent (3-4) from the line in the first half. The team grabbed 18 rebounds, had eight assists, two steals, and one block.

BYU stretched its lead to 11, 58-47, by the end of the third. Mbengue and Luisa Vydrova each added six points to pace the Miners.

The Cougars led by as many as 17 late in the fourth quarter, and despite a nine-point period from Asensio, the Miners could not get closer than 13 and the game finished 81-68 in favor of BYU.

The visitors shot 48.6 percent (36-74) from the field, including 66.7 percent (10-15) in the final period. BYU also shot 25.9 percent (7-27) from three, and 100.0 percent (2-2) from the foul line in the contest. They pulled down 42 rebounds while tallying 21 assists, three steals, and six blocks. Emma Calvert led the game with 27 points on 13-18 shooting. She also grabbed a team-high seven boards and swatted a game-best three blocks.
