UTEP TF Captures Three Medals on Day One at CUSA Championships Friday

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The UTEP track and field team completed the first day of competition with a silver and pair of bronze medals at the Conference USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the Liberty Indoor Track Complex on Friday evening. 
 
Freshman Alla Parnov leaped to a silver-medal finish in the women's pole vault final with a 3.98-meter mark (13-0.5) and tallying eight points in her first collegiate championship competition. 
 
Freshman Joyce Kemboi clocked in a 16:46.71 for a third-place finish and tallying six points in the women's 5000-meter final. Teammate Sandra Maiyo placed fifth (16:57.57) and recorded four points in her first collegiate 5000m race. 
 
The women's DMR team composed of Ruth Jerubet, Zani Meaders, Vallary Kiplagat, and Kemboi posted an 11:48.26 to earn bronze with six points.
 
The men's DMR tallied four points as Maxwell Kipkosgei, Karon Dean, Stephen Carreto and Alejandro Tarin clocked in a 10:52.04. 
 
The first day of competition also saw multiple Miners qualify for Saturday's finals in their respective events.
 
Jordani Woodley headlined the day by tying the CUSA indoor record in the 60-meter hurdles preliminaries, clocking in a 7.77 to qualify for the final. Woodley tied with Southern Miss' Caleb Parker (2019) and UTSA's Bashiru Abdullahi (2022). 
 
Marissa Simpson clocked in an 8.24 to qualify for the women's 60m hurdles' final. 
 
Niesha Burgher (7.40) and Rejoice Sule (7.48) qualified for the women's 60-meter dash final, while Xavier Butler (6.77) advanced on the men's side.
 
Burgher clocked in a 23.38 and Sule a 23.89 in the women's 200-meter dash prelims and will race in Saturday's final, along with Butler (21.03) on the men's side in the 200. 
 
Princess Uche (54.92) and Loubna Benhadja (55.45) will race the women's 400-meter final tomorrow, while Julio Pacheco Estrada (48.09) and Joshua Hill (48.14) will take the track in the men's 400 final. 
 
Jerubet (5:00.85) and Aron Tanui (4:17.77) qualified for the women's and men's mile final, respectively. 
 
Tanui (1:54.09) will also race the men's 800-meter final.
 
Jalen Cadet leads the heptathlon with 3,091 points as he placed first in the high jump (2.03m, 6-7.75), and third in the shot put (12.05m, 39-6.25) and long jump (6.78m, 22-2.75). Cadet also scored two points in the men's long jump final with a 7.09m (23-3). 
 
Oleksandr Blonskyi is sixth in the heptathlon with 2,631 points, while he posted 1.5 points in the men's pole vault final (4.38m, 14-4.25).
 
Aleks Hristov scored five points in the men's weight throw final with a 19.13m (62-9). 
 
Liberty (68.5 points) stands in first place, while Sam Houston (50.5), Middle Tennessee (31), LA Tech (21.5), UTEP (12.5) and WKU (8) score on the men's side. 
 
The Liberty women's team (68) is also in first with FIU (50), Middle Tennessee (41), UTEP (25), WKU (13), LA Tech (11), NM State (11), Jax State (10) and Sam Houston (5) trailing. 
 
DAY 2 INFO
Saturday will begin with the conclusion of the combined events at 8:30 a.m. MT, while the field events will start with the women's shot put at 10 a.m. MT. The track events will start at noon MT with the women's mile final. The meet will conclude at 3:15 p.m. MT with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
