EL PASO, Texas –
UTEP women's basketball (11-16, 6-8 CUSA) trounced Jax State (10-16, 5-9 CUSA) 70-48 on Thursday night in front of a rowdy 1,215 fans inside the Don Haskins Center. Four Miners scored in double figures in the win.

For the second time in as many games, UTEP scored first and never relinquished the lead. A Luisa Vydrova 3-pointer to start the game set the tone for the Miners on offense, but it was their defensive game that shined tonight.

The 48 points scored by the Gamecocks is the fewest allowed by the Miners in the 2023-24 campaign. For good measure, UTEP also held the visitors to the lowest field goal percentage (26.9), fewest free throw makes (5) and attempts (8), and second lowest three-point percentage (19.4) of the season.

The Miners outrebounded the Gamecocks 42-32, including 36-19 on the defensive glass. The Orange and Blue also outscored Jax State 38-20 in the paint and 32-9 off the bench. The visitors held the advantage in points off turnovers (16-9) and fast break points (15-4).

Delma Zita paced the Miners with 16 points, followed by Mahri Petree with 14. Petree also contributed seven rebounds, two assists, a steal, and a block. Jane Asinde posted 12 points and six rebounds, while adding a team-high four steals, and assist and a block.

Vydrova went for 10 points, two rebounds, one steal, and one block. Erin Wilson finished with six points and a game-high nine rebounds and Ivane Tensaie posted five points, three rebounds, and a led the team in assists with three.

UTEP finished the night shooting 55.1 percent (27-49) from the field, 42.9 percent (6-14) from deep, and 66.7 percent (10-15) from the charity stripe. The team grabbed 42 rebounds, tallied eight assists, eight steals, and swatted three blocks in the contest.

"We worked all week on our defensive scheme for this game," Head Coach Keitha Adams said. "I think we really wanted to play well tonight and get this win because we had a tough loss against them at their place. They had 18 at half and we held them to 48 and that's probably the best defensive effort we've had this year."

The Miners jumped out to an early lead to start the game and were up 19-8 at the end of the first period. They drained three shots from downtown in the first.

The Orange and Blue didn't let up the pressure in the second quarter, leading by 23 (41-18) as the teams headed to the locker rooms. Asinde and Zita both had 10 points to pace the team.

UTEP shot 58.6 percent (17-29) from the floor, 37.5 percent (3-8) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (4-6) from the foul line in the first half. The Miners pulled down 29 rebounds, had five assists, two steals, and one block.

The Gamecocks pulled within 13 to start the second half, but the Miners made some key stops and led by 20 (52-32) at the end of the third.

UTEP never stepped off the gas and cruised to a 22-point victory, 70-48.

Jax State shot 26.9 percent (18-67) from the field, 19.4 percent (7-36) from three, and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the free throw line. The Gamecocks tallied 32 rebounds, 12 assists, and 11 steals in the contest. Rachel Johnson led the visitors with 15 points, all coming from beyond the arc, followed by Kristol Ayson with eight and Bre'Anna Rhodes with 10. Johnson also posted a team-high six boards and four assists. Madison McCoy and Asia Barclay each had five rebounds and Ayson led the Gamecocks with four steals.
