DAY 1 RESULTS

LUBBOCK, Texas –
The UTEP track and field team closed out day one at Texas Tech's Jarvis Scott Open in the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center, while Joyce Kemboi set the school record in the 5000-meter run at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., on Friday evening.

Kemboi clocked in a personal-best and program-record 15:43.43 at the Husky Classic hosted by Washington. Kemboi was the lone Miner to compete in Seattle. She broke Risper Kimaiyo's 12-year old record (16:04.88).

"Joyce set a new school record by almost 20 seconds," UTEP Director of Track & Field Mika Laaksonen said. "This came from a freshman who arrived UTEP midyear. It was an impressive performance in her first 5,000-meter race for us. It was a great beginning and Joyce has a bright future ahead of her."

Aron Tanui set a personal best in the men's 800-meter race, clocking in a CUSA-best 1:48.76. Tanui's time ranks sixth on the program's all-time list.

Jalen Cadet, who came into the weekend ranked fourth in CUSA in the long jump leaped a personal-best 7.16 meters (23-6) and finishing second.

Xavier Butler clocked in a personal-best 6.72 in the men's 60-meter dash preliminaries.
