UTEP WBB Hosts Liberty on Senior Day

UTEP women's basketball (11-16, 6-8 CUSA) will face off against Liberty (14-14, 9-4 CUSA) on Saturday in the final home game of the regular season on Senior Day. Tipoff is set for 1:00 p.m. MT.

PREVIOUSLY ON
UTEP improved to 11-16 after a dominant 70-48 victory over Jax State Thursday evening. The Miners scored early and often and never trailed in the contest. It was the second time in as many games that the team led the entire game, following the wire-to-wire win at Sam Houston last week. They pulled down 42 rebounds, tallied eight assists, eight steals, and three blocks. Four Miners scored in double-figures, led by Delma Zita with 16 points. Mahri Petree put up 14, Jane Asinde had 12, and Luisa Vydrova scored 10. Erin Wilson paced the team on the boards with nine, followed by Petree with seven. Ivane Tensaie dished out a team-high three assists and Asinde snagged a game-best four steals.
 
DELMA DAZZLED
Delma Zita poured in a career-best 16 points against Jax State while also adding four rebounds, one assist, one steal, and not committing a single foul.
 
STUFFING THE STAT SHEET
Mahri Petree had another complete game against the Gamecocks, putting up 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists, one steal, and one block.
 
LIVELY LUISA
Luisa Vydrova put up 10 points on 4-6 shooting against Jax State, including draining two shots from beyond the arc. It is her second straight game with 10+ points, and fourth of the season. She also tallied two rebounds, an assist, and a block in the game.
 
SPLASH ZONE
Ivane Tensaie has shot 50.0 percent (14-28) from long distance over the last five games.
 
ERIN "WINDEX" WILSON
Erin Wilson pulled down a game-high nine boards against the Gamecocks. It marked the 10th time this season that she has led the team in rebounding.
 
STICKY FINGERS
Jane Asinde swiped a game-best four steals against Jax State. That is one shy of tying her career-best in steals (five).
 
LOCK IT DOWN
The Miners held the Gamecocks to the lowest field goal percentage (26.9), fewest free-throw makes (5) and attempts (8), and second lowest three-point percentage (19.4) of the season.
 
FEELIN' FINE AT THE FOUL LINE
UTEP is averaging 19.9 free throw attempts per game this season. That is good enough for third in conference and 44th in the nation.
 
SHARP SHOOTERS
The Miners shot 55.1 percent (27-49) from the field against the Gamecocks. It was the seventh time this season they have posted a 50.0 percent or better field goal percentage.
 
CRASHING THE BOARDS
UTEP outrebounded Jax State 42-32, the 18th time this season that the team has tied or outrebound opponents. It was also the ninth game this season that the Miners recorded 40 or more rebounds.
 
DEFENSIVE HUSTLE
Jane Asinde leads CUSA and ranks 30th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (6.9).
 
IN THE RANKS
Two Miners are putting up numbers that place them in the top 100 nationally.   Jane Asinde leads CUSA in three categories, free throw attempts (177-13th), free throws (123-25th), and defensive rebounds per game (6.9-30th). She also sits second in double doubles (11-41st), and rebounds (239-62nd), and third in rebounds per game (9.2-52nd). Erin Wilson sits fifth in CUSA in both rebounds (221-94th) and rebounds per game (8.2-90th).
 
SCOUTING Liberty
Liberty is 14-14 on the year, and 9-4 in conference play. The Lady Flames average 65.1 points and 39.1 rebounds per game. The team ranks second in conference in four categories, including blocks per game (4.4-42nd NCAA), field goal percentage defense (38.1-70th), rebound margin (3.9-87th), and rebounds per game (39.1-72nd). They are also ranked third in conference in defensive rebounds per game (26.5-88th). Bella Smuda paces the team in both points (14.6), rebounds (9.6), and blocks (2.4). Emma Hess sits second on the team with 13.0 points, followed by Asia Boone (9.3), Jordan Hodges (8.1), and Elisabeth Aegisdottir (4.1). Hess also ranks second on the team in rebounds (3.9), while Hodges leads the Lady Flames in assists (4.3), and Boone tops the team in steals (1.4). Smuda leads CUSA and is ranked in the top 100 in three categories: double doubles (13-27th NCAA), rebounds (269-31st), and rebounds per game (9.6-43rd). She also sits second in the league in a further three categories: blocks (68-15th), blocks per game (2.4-18th), and field goal percentage (57.8-20th). Hess leads the league in three-point percentage (38.6-48th NCAA), while sitting second in both three pointers (64-64th) and three pointers per game (2.3-69th). Hodges tops CUSA in assist/turnover ratio (2.0-63rd NCAA) and ranks second in conference in assists (120-80th) and assists per game (4.3-88th).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE LADY FLAMES
The Miners are 0-1 all time against the Lady Flames. UTEP fell to Liberty 87-68 in Lynchburg on 2/3/24.
