Huntsville Ala. –
UTEP women's basketball (12-19) fell 78-50 to No. 1 seed Middle Tennessee (27-4) in the quarterfinals of the 2024 CUSA Championships Wednesday.

The Miners kept the top-ranked scoring offense in CUSA in check through three quarters before the Lady Raiders pulled away in the fourth.

UTEP allowed just one three-pointer Middle Tennessee in the first half but could not contain them as the Lady Raiders drained 10 in the final two quarters. Rebounding was another factor, with MTSU winning the boards (51-28). That was aided by 18 offensive rebounds.

Jane Asinde and Luisa Vydrova both tallied 14 points to lead the way offensively for the Miners. Mahri Petree provided six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Four Miners registered two assists apiece, while Petree swatted a game-high two blocks.

UTEP shot 30.8 percent (16-52) from the field, 31.3 percent (5-16) on 3-pointers, and 72.2 percent at the free-throw line (13-18). The Miners also took good care of the ball with only seven turnovers.

"First off, I want to acknowledge that Jane Asinde is a heck of a player. I have had the honor and privilege of coaching her for three years, and it's been a joy. Mahri Petree is someone I've enjoyed coaching, she's a unique young lady with a big heart. It's been pure joy coaching these two gals," UTEP head coach Keitha Adams said. "Against Middle Tennessee for three games, we played them tough for 30 minutes. Three quarters we played them tough, and then it got away from us like a freight train. They've got a great team. We've got a lot of work to do in our program to get it where we want it to be. We've done some good things this year, but we definitely want to set the bar higher."

It was a defensive battle in the first, with the game knotted at 11 at the end of the first quarter.

The Lady Raiders pulled away slightly in the second quarter, leading 30-25 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.

The Miners shot 33.3 percent (7-21) from the floor, 42.9 percent (3-7) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (8-12) from the foul line in the first half. They pulled down 16 rebounds, had six assists and one block.

Middle Tennessee got hot in the third quarter, hitting five threes to help stretch the lead to 14 (51-37) by the end of the period. The Miners kept fighting but could not get back in the game in the final 10 minutes.

UTEP guarded well by keeping Middle Tennessee to 37.3 percent (25-67) from the floor, including just 27.5 percent (11-40) from 3-point range. The Blue Raiders finished at 81.0 percent (17-21) on free throws. Courtney Whitson led four Middle Tennessee players in double figures with 21 points.
