Both student-athletes are coming off spectacular performances at the 2024 Conference USA ITF Championships Feb. 23-24 in Lynchburg, Va.

Burgher continued her successful season, clocking in a facility and CUSA-best 22.97 in the women's 200-meter dash final to take home a gold medal. Burgher bettered Charlotte's Joyasia Smith's facility time of 23.30 (set earlier during the 2024 season), while UCF's Aurieyall Scott posted a then-CUSA best 23.35 in 2013.

Simpson raced out to a gold-medal performance in the women's 60-meter hurdles final, clocking in a facility-record 8.12. Her time beat out Cha'Mia Rothwell's (unattached) 8.14 in 2022.

Burgher ranks tied 16th nationally in the 200m (22.97) with Texas Tech's Rosemary Chukwuma and Texas's Kevona Davis. Simpson ranks 16th in the 60m H (8.12).

The Miners will compete at the indoor championships on the female side for the first time since 2017 (Tobi Amusan). It's the initial occasion that multiple female UTEP track and field student-athletes (six) will partake at the event since 2016. Overall, UTEP last competed at the indoor championships in 2018 when Michael Saruni and Jonah Koech advanced.

Simpson is the first UTEP female student-athlete to compete in the 60-meter hurdles at the national level since Amusan when she earned All-America honors in the event in 2017. Burgher is the first Miner in 29 years since Melinda Sergent (1995) and only second in program history to compete in the women's 200 at nationals.
