The UTEP soccer team (2-2-2) heads to San Antonio, Texas, Thursday for a match against UIW (1-3-2). Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. MT/ 7 p.m. CT.

UTEP slipped to 2-2-2 in 2024 after a tough 2-1 loss at UNM Sunday. After a scoreless first half, Ana Quintero scored her third goal of the campaign in the 68th minute off an assist from Eve Barry. The Miners held that lead until the final 10 minutes, when the Lobos found the back of the net in the 84th and 89th minute of regulation. The Miners had nine shots in the game, including four on goal. Angelina Amparano made six saves in net for UTEP.

Ana Quintero leads or is tied for the lead in several stat categories, including goals (three), points (six), shots (10), shots on goal (five), and game-winning goals (one).
 
IN THE RANKS
UTEP leads CUSA and is among the top 70 nationally in three categories. The Miners rank 55th in Goals-Against Average (0.667), 59th in Save Percentage (.840), and 67th in Shutout Percentage (.500). Additionally, two UTEP players are putting up numbers that rank them in the top 80 individually. Angelina Amparano sits 77th in goals against average (.727), 72nd in save percentage (.833)  and 70th in shutouts (two). Mina Rodriguez ranks 69th in total assists (three) and 72nd in assists per game (0.50).
 
LOCKING IT DOWN ON D
UTEP's four goals against is the fewest through the first six games of a season since 2016 when the Miners gave up two.
 
AMPING UP THE PRESSURE
The Miners have recorded 16 shots on goal in the past three matches, out-performing opponents by six (16-10).
 
FIRING SQUAD
Ana Quintero and Mina Rodriguez lead UTEP with 10 shots apiece. Taya Lopez stands in third with six shots while Sheyliene Patolo and Anai Lopez round out the top five with five shots each.
 
ALL ABOUT EFFICIENCY
Seven Miners are posting at least .500 SOG% this season. Sheyliene Patolo has a team-leading .600 shots on goal percentage (3-5). Eve Barry (2-1), Ana Quintero (10-5),  Daniele Tovar (2-1), and Maya Vitoria (2-1) are all hitting right at .500. Ashlyn Neireiter and Sarina Villa Cuellar both have had one total shot on frame (1.000 SOG%).
 
SHARING THE WEALTH
Seventeen different UTEP players have registered a shot through the first six games of the season, with 15 tallying at least two shots.
 
GOOD THINGS COME IN THREES
Only three Miners have started every match thus far. Angelina Amparano and Ashlyn Neireiter have held strong on defense while Mina Rodriguez has been leading the charge from the front.
 
GET THAT CORN(ER) OUTTA MY FACE!
The Miners have not allowed a goal in 20 corner kick tries from opposing teams through the first six games of the season.
 
ON THE OFFENSIVE
UTEP has earned five corners in each of its last three matches, outdoing opponents by nearly half (15-8) over that span.
 
FLIPPING THE SCRIPT
UTEP has started the 2024 season in a dramatically different fashion to 2023. The 2024 squad holds the advantage in multiple categories through the first six games of the season, including record (2-2-2 vs 1-4-1), shots (65-38), shots on goal (19-16), and goals (6-4). The Miners also have more assists (6-2), corners (24-20), and fewer goals against (4-13) compared to the 2023 team.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: UIW
The Cardinals are 1-3-2 in 2024, with their lone win coming at Prairie View A&M. Five UIW players have gotten in on the scoring action this season, each scoring one goal (Alex Knutson, Janaya Doane, Peri Olmo, Ellie Mai Sanford, and Sierra Wannamaker. Sinead Duffy paces the team in assists with two while Kiana Villa and Knutson both have tallied one. Knutson also leads the team in shots with 11 followed by Wannamaker with nine. The pair also pace the team in shots on goal with four and six, respectively. Erica Defferding has carried the brunt of the goal-tending duties for the Cardinals, appearing in five of six matches while making 29 saves and allowing nine goals in 105 shots faced. Faith Davies has made one appearance in net, saving all five shots faced. Defferding is ranked in the top 100 nationally in two categories, saves per game (5.8- 28th) and total saves (29-63rd). As a team, UIW shows discipline and commits only 7.0 fouls per game (42nd in nation). The Cardinals are also ranked in shot accuracy (.569- 21st), saves per game (6.33- 30th), and save percentage (.809-92nd)
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE CARDINALS
UTEP is 6-1 all-time against UIW. The last matchup between the two was on 9/3/23, and saw the Miners win 1-0 at University Field, marking HC Gibbs Keeton's first victory at the helm of the program.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Following the match at UIW, the Miners will head a bit further east for a matchup at Texas Southern (9/15) for the final non-conference game of the season. Then, UTEP opens conference play at new Conference USA member Kennesaw State (9/19).
 
The next chance to catch the Miners at home is Thursday, Sept. 26, when they welcome Middle Tennessee to University Field in their CUSA home opener.
