UTEP Soccer Takes on Texas Southern Sunday

The UTEP soccer team (2-3-2) continues its four-game road trip at Texas Southern (1-6) Sunday evening. Kickoff is set for 5:30 pm MT/ 6:30 pm CT. The Miners are looking to break a two-match skid against the Tigers.

UTEP slipped to 2-3-2 in 2024 after a 1-0 setback at UIW Thursday evening. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinals took the lead in the 53rd minute off a goal from Alex Knutson. The Miners outshot UIW 14-7 but could not manage to find an equalizer. Nicole Morales led all UTEP players with four shots, while Ana Quintero, Ally Stickney, and Maya Vitoria all registered two. Angelina Amparano made two saves in net for the Miners.
 
IN THE RANKS
UTEP leads or ranks second in CUSA and is among the top 75 nationally in two categories. The Miners place 61st in goals-against average (0.714), and 73rd in save percentage (.821). Additionally, two UTEP players are putting up numbers that put them in the top 100 individually. Angelina Amparano sits 81st in goals-against average (.769), 95th in save percentage (.815) and 99th in shutouts (two). Mina Rodriguez ranks 65th in assists per game (0.50) and  87th in total assists (three).

Ana Quintero leads the team in four stat categories, including goals (three), points (six), shots (12), and shots on goal (five).
 
HOW MAY SHE ASSIST YOU?
Mina Rodriguez leads the team with three assists this season, including serving up two assists in one game in the Miners' 3-0 rout over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi earlier this season.
 
DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE
UTEP's five goals against is the fewest through the first seven games of a season since 2016 when the Miners gave up just two.
 
AMPING UP THE PRESSURE
The Miners tallied 14 total shots against UIW, which ties for the team high this season. Not only that, UTEP has registered 10 or more shots in five out of seven games played in 2024.
 
DOUBLE TROUBLE
Ana Quintero and Mina Rodriguez have been pacing the team on offense this season and are the first two Miners to reach double-digit shot attempts (12 and 10, respectively) on the year.
 
FIRING SQUAD
Eighteen different UTEP players have registered a shot through the first seven games of the season, with 17 tallying at least two shots and five Miners registering five or more.
 
GET THAT CORN(ER) OUTTA MY FACE!
The Miners have not allowed a goal in 23 corner kick tries from opposing teams through the first seven games of the season.
 
ON THE OFFENSIVE
UTEP has earned five or more corners in each of its last five matches, more than doubling its opponents' corner-kick opportunities (28-11) over that span.
 
SCOUTING REPORT: TEXAS SOUTHERN
The Tigers are 1-6 in the 2024 campaign, with their lone win coming at UTRGV. Liz Alberto scored TSU's game-winner and only goal of the season against the Vaqueros. Isabella Dillow leads the Tigers in shots with 10, followed by Alyssa Taylor with six. All six of Taylor's shots have been on frame, which is a team high. Netminding duties have been shared between three players, with Alessandra Bastidas seeing the most action. Bastidas has made 36 saves and allowed 15 goals in 87 shots faced. The Tigers rank 13th in the nation in saves per game (7.57) and Bastidas is 23rd in the NCAA in saves per game (6.00) and 49thfour total saves (36).
 
SERIES HISTORY WITH THE TIGERS
This will be the first ever matchup between UTEP and TSU.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
UTEP's final of four road games is the Conference USA opener at new CUSA member Kennesaw State on Sept. 19. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. MT/ 7 p.m. ET.
 
The next chance to catch the Miners at home is Thursday, Sept. 26, when they welcome Middle Tennessee to University Field in their CUSA home opener.
