EL PASO, Texas –
The UTEP soccer team (2-1-2) defeated Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (1-2-2) in a 3-0 thrashing at University Field Thursday evening. Sheyliene Patolo put the Miners ahead 11 minutes into the second half and Eve Barry and Ana Quintero put the game to bed.

UTEP held the advantage over A&M-Corpus Christi in total shots (13-5), shots on goal (5-0), and corner kicks (5-2) as they cruised to a senior night dub.

The three goals mark the most scored by the Miners since a 3-1 victory at Wyoming on 9/4/22 and most goals at home since a 3-1 rivalry win over NM State on 2/11/21.

"We've needed our attack to come alive and that's what happened in the second half," Head Coach Gibbs Keeton said. "We are just barely finding out what we are capable of and that is probably what I am most excited about, that we are barely scraping the surface of our ability. The team played in a manner that allowed us to be creative high up the field, and they were super brave, and that's what we are asking for. We are really proud of how we scored the goals tonight, not just the goals themselves."

The first half saw balanced action from the two sides, with the Miners holding a one-shot advantage over the Islanders (5-4) at the end of the period.

Taya Lopez got the ball rolling in the 12th minute with a try that just missed the top left corner. Daniele Tovar followed that in the 21st, hitting a second-chance ball low to the right corner, forcing a save from TAMU-CC keeper Zoe Theriot.

Later, in the dwindling minutes of the first half, Eve Barry, Ashlee Mora, and Marina Hill would all tally shots of their own, but none were on target.

The Islanders recorded four shots in the first half, including a ball off the crossbar from Emmie Barton in the 41st minute, but the score remained level at the break.

The second half belonged entirely to the Orange and Blue. Just 11 minutes into the period, Patolo slotted home the game-winner off of brilliant build up from Hayden McMillan and Mina Rodriguez, who both earned assists on the goal. It marks Patolo's first goal of the 2024 campaign.

From there, the floodgates opened, and the Miners put in two more goals in less than 15 minutes of play. Barry also notched her first goal of the season, drilling one low to the corner off a second assist from Rodriguez in the 64th minute.

Finally, Quintero took all the wind out of the Islanders' sails in the 71st minute, pouncing on a poorly-handled stop from Theriot and burying it.

Much can be said of the UTEP defense as well, as they held the visitors to just one shot in the second half, and zero shots on goal in the contest. Keepers Angelina Amparano and Tionna Taylor both shared a piece of the shutout.

The Miners now head out on a four-game road swing. Up first, UTEP travels to Albuquerque, N.M., Sunday to take on New Mexico at 1:30 p.m. MT.

The next chance to catch the Miners at home is Thursday, Sept. 26, when they welcome Middle Tennessee to University Field in their Conference USA home opener.

"To show up the way we did tonight in front of our community, on heroes night and senior night, is massive. I want to give a special shoutout to our football team for coming out, their support was huge tonight. Scotty (Walden) needs to know that we're behind the program 100 percent, and we feel the same way for them. Thank you to them and thank you to the community. We love to play at home. I love to play in El Paso because it is my hometown, so tonight was special," Keeton said.
