UTEP Soccer Comes Up Short At Middle Tennessee, 4-0

Game Book

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. –
The UTEP soccer team was upended at Middle Tennessee, 4-0, Sunday afternoon. The Miners (3-9-4, 0-4-3) hung around for a good chunk of the game, trailing only 1-0 with roughly 12 minutes left before the Blue Raiders (9-5-3, 4-2-1) scored three times in five minutes to snuff out any rally hopes for the visitors.

Idun Kvaale (17'), Hannah Murphy (78'), Emma Pettersen (79') and Yana Yordanova (83') found the back of the net to key the attack for the home side.

UTEP took six shots, including a pair on target, but Demi Gronauer (one) and Emilly McGrain (one) each were up to the task to deliver a save. It also secured a corner kick. Sophia Dean was credited with one stop while playing the bulk of minutes in the net for the Miners before Savanah Finley logged the final 8:10 of action.

Dean, who had a career-high nine stops in a 1-1 draw at WKU on Oct. 16, did well to punch a shot high from Kvaale (5') on MT's first try of the tilt. It then ricocheted off the crossbar, but UTEP was able to clear it out of harms' way. The Orange and Blue did well with their defensive shape to wipe out a dangerous situation by catching the Blue Raiders offside (10').

The home side managed to get on the board after an unlucky sequence for UTEP. Dean raced off her line to smother a thru ball, but after initially smothering it, the ball bounced free. MT got the loose change where Pettersen threaded the pass to Kvaale. Dean sprinted back to her net, but despite her best efforts, the shot by Kvaale (17') bested her to the lower, left corner.

The Miners started to probe the Blue Raiders' defense, with Mina Rodriguez (25') blasting a shot that was blocked. UTEP then had a chance off a set piece, but the attempt by Kaila Hudson (33') was off the mark to the right.

MT earned a corner kick with a little less than 10 minutes left in the half. The ball was played into the box, but UTEP's defense swarmed and prevented the home side from even getting a shot on frame. The Miners countered and got a clean look for Eve Barry (40'), but the shot sailed high. The Orange and Blue erased another opportunity in the final minute after catching the Blue Raiders offside again.

Ana Quintero applied good pressure in the early stages of the second half, forcing a blocked shot and then drawing a foul. Ashlyn Neireiter (49') rifled a low, hard shot on the ensuing free kick, but Gronauer smothered it cleanly.

UTEP pushed the ball up the pitch as the half wore on, but the sequence was stopped on offside (71'). The Miners continued to pressure, securing a corner kick (76'). To its credit, MT cleared it away. The Blue Raiders then bolted up the pitch with a quick passing sequence leading to a wide-open look for Murphy. Dean did her best, but the ball ended up in the back of the net.

Less than 40 seconds later, a well-timed pass from the Blue Raiders' defensive side of the pitch sent in Pettersen alone on a breakaway. She deked and put it away. UTEP tried to regroup, but MT tacked on its third goal in a five-minute span with another breakaway. This time, it was Finley who couldn't deny Yordanova.

The Miners got another look for Neireiter (84'), but it was handled by McGrain.

UTEP will wrap up the 2025 regular season by playing host to I-10 rival NM State on "Senior Night" at 7 p.m. MT Saturday.
