EL PASO, Texas-
The UTEP women's basketball team (9-15 2-11 CUSA) was defeated by Kennesaw State (10-15, 5-9 CUSA) 68-56 Thursday evening in the Don Haskins Center. A cold-shooting third quarter by the Miners allowed the Owls to open up the double-digit lead.

UTEP shot 33.3 percent (18-54) from the field, 27.8 percent (5-18) from three, and 83.3 percent (15-18) from the foul line in the game. The Miners pulled down 41 rebounds while registering 10 assists, eight steals, and two blocks.

Ndack Mbengue paced the team in both points (12) and rebounds (12) for her seventh double-double of the year. Delma Zita (10), Ivane Tensaie (eight), Heaven Samayoa-Mathis (eight) and Portia Adams (seven) round out the Miners top five scorers.

"Rough one for us tonight, Harden was phenomenal for them," Head Coach Keitha Adams said. "I thought we did some good things. I thought we rebounded better against them than we did at their place. But we had some moments where we played tentative and scared. You can't play scared. I want our team to play with confidence. If you're going to make a mistake, make it while being aggressive, not while playing passive, tentative, or scared."

The teams traded buckets to start the game, with Kennesaw State holding a slight advantage, 17-14, at the end of the opening frame. Adams led UTEP with seven points.

The Miners made upped the pressure in the second period, closing the gap and taking a two-point lead, 31-29, into the locker room. Mbengue paced the team with seven boards in the first half.

UTEP shot 39.3 percent (11-28) from the floor, 33.3 percent (3-9) from distance, and 75.0 percent (6-8) from the foul line in the first half. The Orange and Blue grabbed 23 rebounds, five assists, two steals, and one block over the first two quarters.

The Miners went cold in the third, scoring just seven points and allowing the visitors to open up an 11-point lead, 49-38, by the end of the period. Zita led the team with four assists.

UTEP could not dig themselves out of their third-quarter hole, and the Owls took home the 12-point victory.
