EJ Colson Named as Miners’ QB1

EL PASO – UTEP Head Coach Scotty Walden announced EJ Colson as the Miners' starting quarterback on Monday. 
 
Colson, a 6-1, 190-pound redshirt sophomore, transferred to UTEP from UIW. He accounted for 19 touchdowns (16 passes, 3 rushes) and completed over 70 percent of his passes while at UIW in 2025. 
 
The product of Byron, Ga., started in 10 games under center at UIW in 2025, throwing for 2,142 yards on 210-of-296 passing (70.9 percent) with 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions. Colson added 287 yards and three touchdowns on the ground. He threw for a season-high 339 yards (29-of-45) with three total touchdowns (2 pass, 1 rush) at UTRGV, and tallied 306 yards on a season highs in completions (35) and pass attempts (46) with a touchdown against SFA. Colson rushed for a season-most 103 yards and two touchdowns versus ACU, and tied a season high with three touchdown tosses at UTSA. Colson threw three TDs against Lamar.
 
Before playing at UIW, Colson played in three games, making one start at UCF in 2024. He was a three-year starter at quarterback at Cedar Grove HS in Ellenwood, Ga., throwing for 5,969 career yards, 68 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Colson added 1,354 rushing yards with 16 scores. He was an ESPN four-star QB and the number six QB nationally among 2025 players. Colson was named the Georgia Region 5-3A Player of the Year for 2023 after completing 182 of 285 passes for 2,634 yards, 31 touchdowns and only one interception. He also rushed for 868 yards on 132 attempts and six TDs.
